I have the head back from the machine shop with new valves and seats. How do I go about adjusting the valves? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The best way to adjust your valves is to start with the number one piston in firing position, you can check that the piston is in the proper position by lining the rotor up with the number one plug wire on your distributor cap. When number one piston is firing position you can adjust the intake and exhaust valves on the number one cylinder. Now remove the other three spark plugs. if your firing order is 1-3-4-2, use a screw driver and insert it into the number three plug hole and rotate the engine until the piston is at the top of its stroke. Now you can adjust the intake and exhaust valves on the number three cylinder, continue the same procedure until you have done all 4 cylinders.I am not positive on the clearence you should be setting the valves out, But am guessing that it should be .014 of an inch. Hope this information helps, e-mail me if you need some more help.

Check book specs for hot clearence about .015-018,add about 50% for cold assembly or about .025, run engine 15-30 minutes until warm and adjust to book specs. A little loose/slight tick better than quite/too tight- possible burn valve/leak. RN.

Scott: Valve setting on a 140 calles for .014 when the engine is hot (working temp) You may find the tractor runs a bit smoother with exhaust valves just a bit wider, .016 to .018

I set my 140 at .014 and noticed a bit of flutter in engine. I then noticed in the IT manual, C-123 calls for .014 both intake and axhaust and C-135 engine called for .014 intake and .020 exhaust. I adjusted my exhaust valves until this flutter disappeared. I now have exhaust valves at .018. Intake is still on .014.

loosen them up so they have a little play. I like to check them warm and the tractor running. I'd guess about .017
