I've read several posts on this and other forums about what things are called in different parts of the country.
So I thought I'd ask this:
what does every one call the briars and bramble and etc that animals won't eat....those things that grow in the middle of pastures or in little ravines...or in the fence rows etc.
Around where I live here in central WV when I was a kid, the farmers would hire men to cut this stuff with a scythe and they refered to it as "cutting filth"

In NH, I've heard it called "briars and brambles that the animals won't eat." There's also lots of other things they won't eat, like hardhacks, goldenrod, thistles, junipers, buttercups, ferns, barberries. Well, I suppose the barberries might fall into the "briars and brambles" category.

Gary: I my part of the world, it would sound as though you were describing Stinking Willie or Rag Weed. Pollen from this plant is one of the malor sources of hay fever. If you suffer from hay fever, filth probably sounds like a good word for it.

Hugh, I guess I didn't explain this right.
What I was trying to say was that in my area, farmers refered to cutting all these non desireable plants as cutting "filth".
As a couple of examples:
Products like Coke or Pepsi are in some areas called "Soda", in other areas they are called pop.

HotDogs some areas....other areas Conny's. - not sure that is spelled right-

If you hired someone to go out and cut these plants on your farm, would you tell someone they were cutting weeds...or brush...or filth or?????

I can't think of a real good example at the moment, but seems like one of the postings I saw on one of the forums was about a tool used to pull stumps out of the ground with either a horse or a tractor and all the different names that people from different parts of the country called it, but it was one-in-the-same tool.

Maybe it was just a bad question for me to try to ask.

Gary: I understood what you were describing and that any undesirable plants would be called filth. Some places they are weeds. I thought I was just giving you one of the worst examples of filth. Not only was the plant Stinking Willie or Ragweed a major source of pollen creating hay fever, it was poision to livestock if they ate it. It definately got mowed down.

In MN we call a turn signal a blinker.
I.E. Turn your dang blinkers on if you are going to turn you dang fool. You can replace (dang fool) with any useful explanative that crosses your mind at the time.
Oh we also call it POP here not Soda. Soda is some thing you spray into a drink. Pop is any thing you have to ahhh Pop the top on. get it?
Even barley Pop. Thats the best kind of Pop.
