went to an auction this morning to try and buy a farmall 400. The auction also had a very rough looking, non-running john deere 40 standard. Stood all morning in the cold just to have the 400 go for well out of my price range, $3700. But what struck me as crazy was the john deere 40. The 40 had wide front and 3-point but that was all that looked salvagable to me. the sheet metel was far past usage, the entire transmission guts was in 2 five gallon buckets, the whole diff. housing was full of water, the head was off the engine and engine locked up. The wide front had been welded and one arm on the 3-point was slightly bent. I was totaly shocked when the tractor sold for $1750. Are these john deere guys stupid? Is this why they ask so much for their tractors when they sell them? Makes me wonder....

I know this is the obvious but it only takes 2 guys trying to stick the other with a pile of junk for to much money at an auction. I had an uncle that liked to play that game. He was lucky, it was usally the other guy who got burnt. I personally never like that type of game.

Some people are nuts for sure! I bought my John Deere 40 in 1999 from the original owner for $1,500 and felt at the time I paid way too much. All original with cultivators and rear plows still attached and everything worked but the lights. I drove it home! (about 15 miles). Lance.

Wadayamean, I have a John Deere and a Farmall 400. By the way I paid $1800 for the 400 and it's in good condition, including the torque amp. S.E. Mn. Ray

Not all are stupid, just some of them. I equally like IH and JD when "they sell for what they're worth". I bought a JD 50 for $1000 in running order but not looking very good. Several years ago I attended an auction where an unstyled A JD (about a 36 or 37) sold for something over $3000 and looked terrible, just barely would run and all tires were so bad that it was questionable whether they would blow before it was even loaded. Right next to it sat a beautiful Super M IH that sounded like a dream when it ran and had nearly new tires, but sold for only $1000. At the time I couldn't afford dropping a $1000 or I would have had that Super M!

At least it makes me feel good about the 400 that I already have. It would be nice if these old tractors would keep a good value.
