when i brought this tractor at auction i thought i paid too much but i couldent help myself, now i know i did, needs trans. gears, i rebuilt carb.ran only on full choke, now i see it leaking antifreeze about two inches back from the carberator about a teaspoon a week looking closely i see about 4 3/8 pins in the casting across the side of the block one inch under the carb. about four inches apart it is leaking from one of these pins. does anyone know what these pins are for?i could fix the leak with J B weld but what do i have here maybe i should dump it and start over? thanks for your help again jimmy

The pins are there because someone repaired a crack. The crack is there because someone let the antifreeze get low and the coolant froze and cracked the block. The location you describe is where these blocks crack when this happens. Such cracks are common on these tractors because when they were new, it was common to use alcohol for antifreeze. Since the cooling system is not pressurized, the alcohol had to be replenished on a regular basis because the alcohol has a low boiling point and constantly evaporates in a non pressurized system. So slip ups in the process resulted in cracked blocks. The blocks can be repaired and will run for years if the crack is not to severe. Lots of them are running that way. So..the suggestion to use JB weld is good. Also, if you can find a skilled welder, the crack can be welded. The welding can be done so you won't even know the crack is there.

whats wrong with the gears?, all rear ends whine on farmall A's, and super A's, is that whats plagueing it?. If thats the case, theres no need to worry, thats normal, just check the fluid and make sure theres oil in there.

I heard a clanking noise; the oil slinger is flopping around I don't think i;ll worry about it. But the third and forth gears are worn about 1/3 back,it still works fine, maybe I just look for trouble. J.B weld did the job ,but i havent worked it yet. had the carb profesionaly rebuilt,works a lot better, but hunts at full throttle ,can the looseness in linkage cause this,also tighting the nut in top of the governor seems to help or amI messing where I shouldent be messing. Thanks again you guys, jimmy

the problem in the carb sounds like the main jet isn't working right and it can be hard to get working well you need to soak it in carb cleaner for a couple days and then blow the liveing day lights out if all the holes in it and if clean enough JB weld will fix your leak that tractor is a good little machine I'd keep it and just give it a little TLC

That's a common place for these blocks to break from freezing without benefit of anti-freeze. It sounds like it was broken and repaired before.

I would suggest cleaning the area as clean as you can get it and try J-B Weld on it. I wouldn't dump it until you give the J-B Weld a try.

The pins were installed perhaps, at the end of the crack to keep from cracking further. This type of crack is very common on this engine, and is not under pressure, so go ahead and repair with JB weld, it'll be fine... Maybe carb problem has something to do with dirt in tank. remove drain plug on carb bowl to see if you got a good steady flow, if you don't, you have a problem other than carburator.
