300 U Runs Hot

I have a 1956 300U with a loader. I use it to work a small 4-5 acre food plot, bush hog and other odds and ends (it probably runs 40-60 hours per year). This tractor starts like a champ, but seems pretty much powerless.

I put a clutch and rear tires on this thing about 18 months ago so I have some pretty substantial money in it at this point. On the other hand I'm a little leary of putting more $ into this thing and not seeing an increase in performance. here's the situation as I know it.

When it starts the oil pressure runs to about 40 +/-, but after it warms up it will drop to less than 20.

When plowing (2-14's) in 1st gear it runs hot after about an hour. I'm much to impatient to plow in 1st gear much longer especially when this tractor seems to be giving everything its got. I plowed with 900 series Fords when I was a kid and moved much faster.

I had the radiator rebuilt at the same time the clutch was put in. It was running hot at that time. My logic was that the radiator was probably plugged, apparantly it wasn't because it still overheats.

The PTO also does not stop when turned off, but from reading some of the other messages it sounds like this may be an adjustment.

In any case I'm to the point where I'm willing to sink some additional money into this thing if I can get some better performance. If not I need to cut my losses. Any info or advice as to what causes the above symtoms would be greatly appreceiated.

Does the tractor have a thermostat in it?

Have you checked the timing? If your engine is out of time it will not have a lot of power & will also cause it to run hot. A 300 should be able to pull a 2-14 trailer plow all day in any type of soil in 3rd w/o a whimper. I wouldn't worry too much about a quart of oil in 15 to 20 hours of working time. When it gets up to a quart every 4-5 hrs of hard work, I'd check it out. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Thanks, I have not checked the timing. It looks like I will be busy the next time I travel towards SD

I would try flushing out the engine block. There may be some junk built up inside. If you dont mind a little teardown, you could check oil clearances for the low oil pressure problem. That also may lead to your heat problem.

Thanks Old Guy,
What is invovled in a little tear down. If I can gain back some HP by rebuilding the engine I would probably be willing to take the project on over the winter. I'm a little nervous about starting this project as I've never been what could be called gifted in the mechanic department.

Your tractor is definitely hurting if you can only pull those plows in 1st gear. I have a 300U that I pulled 2-14 trailer plows with and didn't hardly warm the tractor up. I would look at a couple of things before tearing the tractor apart. On the oil presure what kind of oil are you using. I don't know if the multweight oils will do what you describe. Worn bearings will cause low oil pressure when they warm up. I would check the engine compression. I don't know what it should be but I'm thinking a good cylinder should be over 100 psi. If the compression is good maybe the tractor needs a valve job. Does the tractor smoke when its running - smoking could be worn rings which should also mean lower compression. Is the tractor tuned up OK. Mine loses power when the points are bad. Running a little hotter spark plug helps with todays gas. If you start checking some things and ruling them out maybe we can give you some more ideas.

Thanks Charlie,

Engine oil is straight 30. A tune up is probably a place to start. The engine smokes black when it starts and leaves a black film from the exhaust when run hard. I need to put a qt of oil in about every 15-20 hours of operation. The tractor is in western MN and I'm in Mpls. So it will be a week or two till I can test the compression.

when you first start the tractor cold remove the radiator cap and check for bubbles. you might have a blown head gasket and that would cause you to lose power and over heat at the same time. also the water level will drop some to. when you have the cap removed also check for curculation this will tell you if the thermosate is working and water pump is working. good luck
