Farmall model A head torque numbers

Forgot to mention that I spray high-temp aluminum paint on the gasket and on the head surface right before installing the head. Also, I make sure the head surface is good and flat. I use a mill file for minor burrs and have a "skim cut" machined off heads that show a little warpage.

On the bolt pattern, just start in the center and work your way outward front and to the rear. I always torque my first set at 10 #'s and then go up in 10 or 15 # increments from there. Might be a little overkill for some, but I've never had a gasket blow for either gas or diesels I've done.
As to the torque value, that's based on bolt diameter, thread pitch and grade of the bolt. If your manual says 65#'s then I wouldn't go any higher than 70#'s on the final torquing. I do that anyway as most torque wrenches have a 2 or 3% error. As to the compression pressure, that depends on compression ratio of the engine and the condition of the rings and valves. If that engine has a 7:1 compression ratio then the measured pressure should be about 103 #'s. (7 x's atmospheric pressure, which I think is 14.7 PSI). If it's 8:1 compression then it would be about 117 PSI. and so on...Our AC B model has about 110 PSI pressure, but it's not newly rebuilt. Hope that helps you out.
