40 years ago I remember a guy in our neighbourhood buying a new Cochshutt 570 diesel and a 5x16 trailer plow. He plowed some quite heavy hills with that old Cockshutt. When you get a tractor loaded to point where you can't pull the plow or disk more than 4 mph your wear and breakage will be far less and fields much smoother. These new high speed bottoms just become a more expensive way to farm, and less profit for you. When you sit in that tractor seat for 15 to 18 hours per day for weeks at a time or 44 hours in two days as I have done, that high speed hurts the human flesh more than the tractor and plow. I know some of you will say," Hugh If you were going faster it wouldn't take so long." Hogwash, I say this game is about making money not high speed. When you can drive a 70s full size Ford or Chevy sedan at 50 mph on your fields, on sod of course, the fields are smooth.
