Brakes on a 454

A fellow hunt clubber recently bought a 454 to bushhog with. He's having a problem with the brakes. When the brake pedals are latched together, push them both at once, they'll stop the wheels dead, slide to a stop. But when just one pedal is pressed, like to help steer, it doesn't have any effect. He's getting a manual, but even when it comes they're often not much help with trouble shooting. Y'all got any ideas? I don't know much about these new-fangled models, myself.

Diesel Bob-I am about at the end of my rope with the brakes on my 454. I need to know how to trouble shoot the system.

Hi, search the archives for 454,574,674,484,584 or 684 these all are UK made tractors with German Diesel engines. The transmission, differential, hydraulics and brakes are all the same.

In your case it would appear there is a problem with the brake equalizer mechanism under the battery box and on top of the torque tube. This valve is suppose to apply equal hydraulic pressure to both brakes when the brakes pedals are locked together but when you depress 1 brake it is not suppose to be activated.

The most common problem with brakes on this tractor is air in the system requiring bleeding of the brakes. The sympton of air in the brakes is a spongy brake peddle or having to pump the brake peddle.

Word of caution, ALWAYS MAKE SURE PARKING BRAKE IS OFF before driving tractor or serious damage will result to hydraulic system.
