My brother and I inherited a grain drill (see picture) from our Dad. It has the IH logo on both wheel castings and on the left wheel has the following engraved:
NB
2311
(at least I think it says 2311)
Is anyone familiar with this old steel-wheel drill and know anything about this particular model? We use it with our 1946 Farmall H. Is it possible there is a user's manual available somewhere? Thanks

Jim,

I see your in need of a book for your Model M drill. I bought a used book for my M drill at a show in Il. You can't get a book for the M from CaseIH. I asked many dealers. My book is for the Fluted run feed. If yours is Fluted run feed. Maybe i can help you. My M drill is a 20x6. I plant my Wheat at 8 pecks per acre. The feed cups have 3 notches. For planting Oats, Wheat, Barley and some others. The feed cup bottom should be so the latch is in the top notch.

I hope this helps

Thanks, Steven. I guess we can't know if we have an M until we see a picture from the manual. Could you possibly scan the pic from the book and e-mail it to me at jperry(at)erath.net or e-mail me there, and I will give you a mailing address. It would be appreciated.
Jim

Both my M Drills have a trip arm to set down the drill. Your picture shows two levers.

My guess would be that it is a 16-7 McCormick.

That drill is a model M. That i know of. They never made the No. 10 with steel wheels. I have a model M on low rubber. Knowing how the model M looks, i'm very sure yours is a model M.

Thanks,
After looking at the list of IH Manuals and searching for drills, I guessed that it might be an M, when it said low rubber or high steel.

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful information. You folks are great.

I have a grain drill like yours, bought from my mother inlaw for $75 when fil died. Haven't tried planting small seed with it, but it does a very nice job on oats... Wish i had a manual to help you. Happy farming....dave

Thanks. We have good luck with oats as well. To plant wheat, one has to cover up one side of each pair of holes. We just need a manual to see how to set everything else.
