I have a 1939 F-20 with factory road gear in rearend. Wondering if I can add a step up gearbox to this tractor and if I can how fast would it go. (not planning on getting into NASCAR but just adding some bells and whistles to this tractor. Also looking for some fenders for it with 36 inch rubber.

The aftermarket road gear on the front of the trans can not be engaged with a gear in the 4 spd tractor gear box. SO you won't get any benefit from a road gear box on the front of the trasnmission other than having two different road gears to choose from.

I have bought a few road boxes in the past for my F-20 and Regular. I also have the high-speed gear set for my F-20. The IHC book states the 4th gear speed as 7.07 mph for the high speed set. The road box, I am told, will be about 14-17 mph for the F-20, maybe a little less for the Regular due to a different gear ratio. This should give me a good range of speeds for parade duties.

I am interested in coments on this matter also. I have a F20N with a one piece wide front that has the factory high speed transmission in it an a aftermarket road gear on it also. The tractor project is still in the gather parts stage so I have never seen it run. One of the local farmall experts says the aftermarket roadgear dosen't gain anything over the factory high speed transmission. Its the same speed. I won't know for sure for another year or so.
