Super H starter binding

My Super H occasionally binds when I pull the starter - you just hear it grunt for a second. Loosening the 2 - 3/4" bolts and freeing the gears and away we go again for 15 - 20 starts.

Anybody come across this problem or its solution?

Thanks,
Eric

Only happens on a hurry up day or it is really cold.

Delbert it always happened to me when I was a mile from the house when I was discing and killed it turning a corner then I discovered the crank was at the house.

Am relieved to hear that my H is not the only one to have the starter motor lock up. Have thought it was just a fault with my tractor. Cranking it usually frees it, loosening the bolts is a last resort.

Eric,
Just like you and everybody else, I've had that same problem with my H -- pull the starter to get it free when it locked up.

Last time I pulled the starter, I tore it down - cleaned and lubed the Bendix gears and the bushings, replaced the brushes at a buck or two each. Then I stuck 00 gauge welding cable on it from batt to switch, switch to starter, and batt ground to ground on stater mount bolt, plus put in a killer Optima 6V battery.

So far (a year or so later), I'm amazed. Sounds like it's turning over super fast -- at least as fast as the 12V on the JD lawn tractor with the Kawasaki engine. Of course, if your problem is in the ring gear like Bob says, the results are going to vary. What's more, if I were to run 30W or 40W oil in it and try it this winter -- I doubt I'd get that fast turnover. So consider that as well -- and good luck in cheaply finding the major cause of the problem.

My H does this from time to time. Usually when you need it bad.
The day the starter went out on my 400 and I went to pull it with my H and it all so locked up.
That was the last straw. $300 for a rebuilt starter for the 400 and $19 for a new bendix for the H.

My Super H does exactly the same thing. Replacing the worn bendix on the starter helped, but it still jams several times year. The flywheel ring gear on mine is visibly worn (many of the teeth are chipped on the side facing the starter). I'm certain that's the problem now. When time permits I'm gonna bite the bullet, split the tractor and put in a new ring gear...

Hi, we had a 300U that had the same starter locking problem and it only had about 150 hours on it when we purchased it in 1958. Had to rock in 5th gear or loosen stater mounting bolts.

I have an H that did the same thing. I used to rock it in 5th gear to set it free (not easy if attached to an implement or in soft wet ground). I took off the starter and lubricated the worm type drive that the gear spins foward on. It has not gotten stuck since.
Good Luck

That is a common problem with lots of different tractors, cars, trucks, etc. of that vintage. You probably have a little bit of wear in either the starter drive, the teeth on the flywheel, or both. If it happens only occasionaly, either loosen the starter, rock the tractor with it in 5th gear, or carry a hand crank. If it happens quite often, it's time for some repairs.

I grew up on a straight H they were bad for locking the starter when it does it put it in 5th and rock it or if you have a crank just put the crank in and turn it a little. I am assuming it is a 6V system I don,t know it a 12V system will do this or not, I would think not.
