I Could use a little helpful information !
If the TA is out on a 450 how does that limit its usefulness ? What Does that prevent you from doing ? Can you still use the tractor for plowing ????? Thank you for the help

The TA was IH's powershift. It is located ahead of the 5-speed transmission. It provides Direct Drive and TA range (underdrive) in each gear, giving you 10 forward and 2 reverse speeds. You can powershift between Direct Drive and TA without clutching. Most of the time when someone says "the TA is out", they mean it slips in TA range (lever pulled towards the rear). If this is the case, you will still be able to use the tractor in Direct Drive no problem, you just won't have the advantage of being able to downshift without clutching when you hit a tough spot while plowing. The cost of fixing the TA can vary greatly. If you rebuild your TA yourself, you'll spend around $200. If you install a rebuilt TA unit, it'll cost about $800. You need splitting stands to do this job, as the clutch/TA housing needs to be rolled away from the engine, and split again from the transmission. If you have a Case-IH dealer do the work, it'll be more like $1500. Remember, never travel downhill in TA range on a tractor with the mechanical TA like the 450. They freewheel.

Joe, when the TA or low side of the TA is out it does not effect the high or direct gearing of your tractor. What happens when the low side of your TA fails is the ramp and roller over run clutches within the TA. The function of these ramp and rollers is to lock the TA planatery gear set from counter rotating and forcing the rotating force through the planatery gears. When your in the direct or high side both the main and the TA clutch is engaged and the entire TA planatery carrier rotates 1 to 1 with the engine.

If the tractor will still move under load, you still have lost 1/2 of your available gears to work with.

Thanks Dave, Would it still have enough power to pull a plow or would you burn up the clutch ?

Joe, What Dan said, the low side T/A has been out on our 450 for 3 years, but pulls fine on high.

Should still have the power to pull a plow. Normally you try to get a plow the size such that you can plow in 2nd gear as it makes the soil roll ovr better. You also have 1st gear. The advantage of the TA is that when plowing in 2nd and you hit a hard spot you can shift into a lower gear, the TA without stopping.

I used a SM for years and plowed in third gear 3 bottom plow, if your 450 won't pull a three bottom in 3rd gear something is wrong with the engine.

Thanks Guy's,
That is what I wanted to hear(" Should still have the power to pull a plow")
I was afraid 2nd gear would be to high ,and I would be limited to just using 1st.

Any guesstamate what it would cost for parts to repair ?
Thanks Again

I used my SMTA for a couple years also with TA not working on low side. I can't full 3 bottoms in 3rd by any means in my ground but it worked ok. The seasonal disconnect coupling on the pto broke and I had to split it to fix that. Decided while I had som much stuff off I might as well tear into TA also. I fixed mine with rebuilt ramp and roller setup from Steel Wheel Ranch. I went back to original type though you could get the Sprague type for a bit more money, was only around 100 for wht I got. My ta clutch was ok and so was other stuff in there so just needed seals and gaskets beyond ramp and roller. Put in new clutch disc and throwout bearing casue I was there. Fixed ta itself for about 150 I think. I am glad I did as it is real nice to have the lower gear within a range especially when pulling a baler. If you are not afraid of mechanics it isn't a bad job but I would get a service book and parts book first.

MY SM had 281cu. same as 450, a stock MTA has 264 cu, a 450 should pull 3 bottom anywhere.

I replaced the rollers in my SMTA and it fixed the slipping problem. Lot of work but the parts were less than $20 from Case IH if I remember correctly.

Hi Joe, well I just tore a 350 down that had a noise in the T/A area--found the culprit to be the live pto gear BUT the T/A unit was trashed. I talked to Pete at Wisconsin tractor and he said he could sell me the parts(used) to rebuild for 275. My T/a was so bad--primary sun gear-clutch carrier-ramp and over run clutch + the clutchshaft coupler look like they came from Iraq after the bombing. I opted for the T/A eliminator from Bate corp for 350 and it wont coast going down these east Oregon hills ANYMORE.Oh yes and no 2 plantgear shaft was burned and lost all the (23) needles and shaft which only come as a set of 3 planets and bearing/shaft kit. John
