SMTA hangs in gear. Is it TA RELATED?

My SMTA has always hung in gear when it gets in a bind. The TA has never worked in low. I've owned this tractor since 1984. Someone told me that the TA clutch might be stuck. I have removed the plate over the TA and tried to figure out the problem, but haven't. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

RB, when the fingers on the TA clutch go bad, it is almost impossible to get out of gear. Pull the inspection cover on top of the ta case and make sure that all 3 fingers are there and make sure they are releasing correctly. That probably is your problem if you've adjusted properly and that hasn't worked. This is what is wrong with my 460. One of the fingers on the TA clutch pressure plate broke off and so it can't release completely. The only way to get it out of gear is to pull it out while moving which is what i have been doing for years until I can get it split to fix it.

RB, the TA system uses planatery gear sets to obtain the low range. Even if your TA is adjusted correctly it will not come out of gear for the following reason. Planatery gear set will not rotate backwards. If your tractor is in direct drive (TA forward) and in a forward gear on a slight up hill angle with your clutch in, the tractor will have rear ward pressure on the planatery gear set and will not come out of gear very easy. This also applies if say you were in reverse and backing up a slight incline. It doesn't take much pressure against those planatery gears to cause a slight bind. When you pull the ta lever back and it comes out of gear easy it is because you are releasing the TA clutch. With my tractors I can tell if the tractor is going to roll back a little when I stop so I just clutch and shift out of gear just before for momentom stops.

Red: Just to add to what you have said, if the short linkage between clutch shaft and the TA shaft is properly adjusted your clutch pedal should release both main clutch and TA clutches at the same time.

I have adjusted the linkage according to the instructions in the manual. It makes no difference. The position of the TA lever makes no difference either. It's really a pain to back up to a round bale with a bale spear and have to remember to stop before the spear goes all the way into the bale in order to get the thing out of gear. It really limits my use of the tractor.

RB: Bryan is right you have reached the point it must be repaired. A good working TA is something you shouldn't be without.

does pulling back on the TA lever make it shift easy? If so an adjustment will fix you right up.
