I have a 560 Diesel that I have to store outside presently. It has the 12 volt w/ 2 6 vold batteries. I am wondering if I need to put a charger on it do I just put the positive on one battery and the neg on the neg on the other battery or is it best to charge each battery seperately? Would like to avoid takeing them out to charge them. Hope this isnt too dumb of a ?
Thanks

Your method will work provided that both batteries are equally charged and no bad cells. If they are going down unusally soon the connecting cable should be removed and each load tested on its own merits. Then replace the bad one or best both with new or very clean connections. The secret to starting a 560 Diesel is to have good batteries, clean connections, good working glow plugs, and hold the glow plugs the proper time stated in the manual.

My dad had a 560 Diesel that always had trouble starting. We finally took out the two six volts and put in one twelve volt and never had another problem again. The trick is finding a battery that will fit under the steering rod. This might be a fix for you if yours is having starting problems.

Mr. Oil Man: You don't know what you are talking about. Steering shaft on a 560 goes down between the back corner of batteries and below them. Besides the gentleman never suggested he was having trouble starting, just wanted to know how to hook up charger if needed.

Further more I suggest if you were having problems starting with the two 6 volt batteries, they were either too small or wireing was too light. My 560 and 656 diesels ran for years on the same 6 volt batteries. They also saw a lot of cold weather starting. Battery cables over the years have created a lot of problems the battery has been blamed for. I had a 6 cylinder Deere diesel. Batteries were 6 years old and in late fall I noticed they weren't quite as sharp as in past. I replaced all the battery cables and yes the batteries went two more years. I might add it started daily that winter at temps of minus 15 to 30 F.
