Super M - sputtering, barely running

Used my Super M almost daily last week after an ice storm. It ran like a champ but did notice the carb was getting some frost on the top side (that normal?).

Sunday I start using it and it wouldn't even back up a hill, sputtering and missing. Running on the governor is how it seemed, as if it was fuel starved. Messed with the fuel lines, not plugged and fuel is coming out fine.

Tonight just for grins, put a timing light on it. + and - hooked to the coil and the "sensor" around wire #1. The light would stop blinking when the tractor was sputtering/missing, up to 2 seconds at times. Moved it around to each wire and it was the same way. All wires look tight and not shorting out around the alternator and down to the coil. Anyone have any idea why this would be happening? At least a good place to start looking?

Could you possibly have condensation inside the distributer cap causing arcing inside he cap and the missing? Also if you have a coil check around th coil tower for signs of moisture and arcing there also.

New cap, rotor, condenser, points, plugs, and wires about 10 hours ago. 9 1/2 were the best running I've seen from the tractor.

Arcing inside the cap? Not sure how to tell, I see nothing out of the ordinary in there. And no arcing outside around the coil when I was looking at it in the dark a bit ago.

I had the same thing happen to me and the timing light trick showed that spark was not consistant. Adjusting the points took care of the problem for me.

Frost on top of the carb is normal in cold weather. Not sure about what you aare saying with timing light, mine hooks to plus and minus on battery. You mentioned an alternator, if you have changed over to 12 volts and used a resister in line with the coil you might check it, they do burnout after a while. If you used a 12 volt coil with internal resister, they sometimes do the same thing if neither was used, the points are probably burned out. After that I would start by checking the points, condensor, rotor and dist cap.

Spent some more time on it. The points have a greenish white coating and are pitted but were gapped correctly. They only have about 10 hours on them. I could find no resistor in the line but did not trace it all the way back either. Where is it normally located? If I don't have one, where should it go and where do I get one? Can't get to an IH dealer for a couple weeks.

My coil says "Only use with resistor" right on it. I did just get the tractor but have hard time believing somebody used it without the proper setup. The non-factory wiring is quite old appearing so my guess is it has been some time since the 12v conversion.

If you've got a 12 volt coil and no ballast resistor, there's a good chance the points have been overloaded and got burned; it may have also cooked the coil. You'll probably need to replace both components.

To keep it from happening again you need a resistor in series with the coil primary - ie between the ignition switch and the coil "+" terminal. Get a generic Chrysler-style resistor (NAPA #13ICR or similar - they cost about $5). When mounting the resistor remember it will get hot when the motor runs - keep it away from the gas line, other wiring, etc!

Picked up a new set of points and a new 12V coil. The coil said not to use a resistor so I didn't. Thats ok right?

Fired right up and ran like a champ after the new points and coil were installed.
