Bill, it took a while after I bought the tractor from you to get around to looking for the leak. It turned out to be pretty straight forward. I initially thought the leak was from under the loader valve. It was hard to find, but as I was wiping up the fluid under the seat I finally could tell that the leak was from the top of the valve on a line and not coming from under the valve body. One of the pipe o-rings was missing. The connector and washer stopped most of the leak, but some got out. A $1.30 o-ring from the IH dealer stopped the leak. There is still a small leak from one of the hydraulic lines to fix, but I lose very little fluid. I will get to that soon. I am posting this now so that anyone else who has a problem like this can see that the problem isn't always what it seems. Sometimes you just have to keep looking.

There was a problem like this when I worked on the Doncaster transmission assembly line in 1976 on the 454, 574, 674 models which preceded the 584. Mounted on top the hydaulic lift housing was a flat valve called the unloader and flow control valve which was leaking on a good number of tractors. The leak was not due to the valve or the O rings but was caused by porosity in the lift housing casting at the machined surface where the valve fitted. It was fixed in the Doncaster foundry at that time but possibly still occurred on the the later 84 series which had the same design although I never heard of it. hope this is of help to you.
Alan
