Does anyone know if 1962 b414 IH 6 volt tractor can be converted to a 12 volt system? Thanks

I have a '63 B414 diesel that is a 12 volt system, that a previous owner converted to a negative ground from positive ground, probably by accident, when he replaced the starter. Guages don't work, gotta be cross eyed to trace wiring, etc. Is yours a gas or diesel? If it is gas, you will need to replace a lot of stuff, but it is fairly easy, the guys at the NAPA store or the local Case IH dealer can give you a hand. If it is a diesel, lots easier, starter, alternator, battery. Can't think of anything else, maybe lights?

Joe,
Appreciate your response. My dad bought the b414 new in 1962. I was assuming it was 6 Volt. Guess I was wrong since it had been so long since I messed with it. It is basically sound and has been inside the barn. My dad is very old (96) and had messed up the wiring the last couple of years. It is a gas model & I appreciate any leads for parts. I am going to completely restore it including painting it original Red & off white. Many thanks! "Chub".
PS The tractor also had stock power steering.

Hey, Chub, sorry I didn't see your reply right away. I am having good luck finding parts at my local IH Case store, at the local NAPA store and at a diesel shop in Houston, Texas.

I got a shop manual on line (Yahoo Motorbooks) and it has both the gas and diesel versions of the b414. It shows that the generator output is 13.5 volts and gives 12.7-13.3 volts as the closing range of the regulator.

Sooo, assumptions being what they are, you already have a 12 volt system. The wiring diagram also shows that it is a positive ground, no problem there, lots of military equipment use this, but it does seem to be backwards.

One other place to look for parts is the Mahindra tractor dealer, check their web page for the closest one. The b414 was the model for their first tractor and lots of the parts are interchangable, and cheaper. I haven't tried this yet, but it is another resource.

Me, I'll just be using my b414 with a mower and as a general service tractor on our little ol' place. It's kind of rough, but a tough little tractor.

Hope your restoration works out well and your dad gets to see the end result.

By the way, I'm jealous about the power steering. Good Luck, Joe.

Hi, we had a B414D new in 1962 and it was 12V with two 6V batteries in series. After one of the 6V batteries failed, we replaced both with a large 12V battery. I can't remember if it was +ve or -ve ground.

Chub, I thought all B414s came new from the factory with 12 volt electrics fitted as standard. rastas.
