53 super m wiring follow up question

Finally got the cover off and found a few things.
I had a broken ammeter wire and found a 12 volt generator. Brought it to my local rebuild guy who is matching up a delco alternator for me to replace the generator. My question is..
He says all I need to do is run the one wire from the alternator to the battery positive terminal. I believe he said there is a resistor built into the alternator. Then run everything else off of the battery. Would this eliminate the need for the light and ballast resistor going to the coil?
Thanks in advance.

Bob - Depends what type of alternator the rebuilder picks for you. If it's a "one wire" unit no warning lamp/resistor/diode is needed. A "3 wire" (the Delco 10SI) needs either a warning lamp, resistor or diode in the #1 control line for it to work.

My recommendation is to go with the 3 wire. Cheaper than a one wire, and on a slow-revving tractor one wire units sometimes can not be spun up enough to get them to start charging.

Punch below for a wiring diagram for the 3 wire Delco setup...

Note! You'll still need the resistor inline with the ignition coil. It is there to limit current to the old 6 volt coil that's now fed from a 12 volt system.

I'm quite sure he's supplying me with a one wire alternator. So I guess I'll have one ammeter wire running to the battery stud on the foot starter switch. One ammeter wire running to the on(run)switch. I'll then need a wire from the run switch to a ballast resistor and then to the coil. No need for the warning light or voltage regulator any more? Then I can run the one wire from the alternator to the battery stud on the foot starter to charge the battery. Sound correct?

You got it Bob - no need for warning light and external regulator with the one wire alternator! However for the ammeter to indicate correctly (i.e. show whether the battery is being charged) wiring should be like this:

1 - From alternator output stud to one ammeter terminal. All electrical loads (ignition switch supply, light switch supply) connect to this same ammeter stud.

2 - From the OTHER ammeter terminal to the starter switch battery stud. (Note: If the ammeter reads "backward" when you are finished simply reverse the connections at the two ammeter terminals)

Graphically, simply take the diagram in the link posted above and omit the wiring connected to the #1 and #2 alternator terminals.

Thank you bob m. Can't wait to hook it all up and add some new lights to the tractor.
