I have a Super A that has a 12 volt system and alternator. It also has a voltage reugulator on it. I thought that a voltage regulator was not needed if there is an alternator. As far as I can see the voltage regulator is not hooked up so is there any reason to keep it?

I presume your A was converted to an alternator. If so, they probably left the regulator mounted and disconnected it. If it is not wired, just remove it. Few alternators use external regulators. If my alternator had an external regulator, I'd change the alternator.

That depends on if your alternator has internal or external regulator, if its interanal no you don't need one but if external yes you need one.
You didn't give enough info for me to tell you any more.
Is it delco,motorcraft etc??

I can't tell it is very old and rusty. It had one wire going to it which was not connected when I got it.

Relatively speaking, the one wire alternator with built in regulator is a fairly new version, and has not been available in salvage yards until recently. Most of the 12 volt conversions were done with parts from the salvage yard, to keep expenses down as much as possible. I will just about bet that yours has been done this way, and would require an external voltage regulator.
