I have always heard it said that white smoke is a sign of a fuel imbalance in the carb. Is that the case? If so which petcock are you adjusting to correct the flow imbalance?

Jesse,

If you haven't bought this thing yet, be careful. Could be simple and it could be a mess.

When it is running, do you smell a "sweet" smell? If so, that is antifreeze burning; if the smoke is a very light blue color with no "sickening sweet smell", then it is probably oil burning.

The first thing you have to do is to find out where the smoke is coming from.....is it antifreeze or is it oil. Either way, sounds like this old gal is going to need some work.

Is the antifreeze level up where it should be? Are there bubbles in the radiator when it is running? Does the radiator have oil in it?

Pull the crankcase drain plug and let just a small amount of fluid out...is it oil or is antifreeze?

Just some thoughts for you,

Allan

Definitely burning antifreeze. It is either a cracked block / head or a blown head gasket. Hope for the head gasket. Usually the oil will look milky with a blown head gasket.

The tractor in question is a Cub. I am looking to buy this and was wondering how much trouble the white smoke would cause...Is there any harm in running it with the white smoke?

How hard is it to change a head gasket on a Cub?

Head gasket is no problem on a flat head engine. about an hour job. First I would determine that is the problem first.

White smoke means you are burning oil. Remove your spark plugs and check each one for signs of oil. I had this problem on an F-20. A oil ring on a piston was leaking, allowing oil to reach the spark plug. Black smoke means it is running too rich (Carb settings)

Hi Jessie,

Generally speaking, white smoke coming from a gasoline engine is indicating it is burning antifreeze.

Are you sure it is white, or could it be a very pale blue?

Don't think it is your carb in either case.

Regards,

Allan

White smoke is usually anti freeze. It wont hurt the top end of the engine a lot but check the oil.If the oil is green in color due to anti freeze you you could also have bearing problems in the lower end because the anti freeze can destroy the bearings.
