Farmall H Electrical Problems

I have a '41 H. Wires are good, relay is good, cables are heavy.. but it seems like the only way I can get it started is with a jump/charger. I replaced the battery and everything. With a fully charged battery on its own, it doesnt have enough juice to turn the starter motor even once. Also, after I get it running for a while (a multimeter shows the system is charging.) When I shut the H off with the kill switch it keeps running! I have to push it in and pull it out several times to finally get the engine to die. Whats wrong?

Pat,

I had the same kind of problem with an H starter motor as Nathan had, and maybe you. If you pull it and measure the power required to turn it with no load, it's probably somewhere north of 30 amps, and should be only a few amps. Probably time for a starter rebuild.

The kill switch - assume you have a magneto. All the switch is doing is grounding the mag to stop the engine. Bad switch or bad ground are the most likely problems. If you do have a coil/distributor, a bad switch would explain it, and will also cause your battery to drain.

how do I test the load on that starter motor? Multimeter or something?

Pat,
You can if your multimeter will handle large amperage loads. Check it, as it isn't worth blowing the meter. Otherwise, you can get an indication by using a battery charger in series with a battery to the starter while the whole mess is sitting on your workbench. If it pegs the needle on the charger, the starter is just too hard to turn. A starter in good condition won't move the needle much past 2 amps while it's spinning like a top.

Those are my observations anyway. I had a similar problem, and cleaned the bushing and Bendix gear section, and installed new brushes. Worked like a champ.

Gnarled up Bendix gears can also slow it down when it contacts the ring gear. If that's the case on yours, a new gear assembly is on the order of 50 or 60 bucks. As these are old Delco units, it's easy to find a place that will work on them. I have a friend who got his motor rebuilt and a new gear intstalled for about 100 bucks -- which sounded like a good deal to me -- and gave him a very fast turning starter (people would think he was running a 12 volt system, but it was still 6).

Good luck with it!

Steve

Hi Pat, I may not be qualified to answer your question, but as to your starting problem, is it possible that something is wrong with the starter motor? We have a garden tractor that we had the same problem with. It turned out that the problem was that the magnets inside the motor were no good anymore.

I don't know if this is your problem or not, but it's something to think about.
