This is 4th message I have attempted to post. Must be doing something wrong! Here's my problem: I wish to change the fuel injection pump and don't have knowledge of where to look for timing marks on the pump and the engine. I need some good advice very soon as I need my tractor desperately. Can someone enlighten me to the location of the timing marks? If the reader is not familiar with the IH 3444 then perhaps someone with knowledge of any IH tractor with the BD154 diesel will suffice?

LA Bill, I am glad to be able to help. I was uncertian about the nut on the timing gear. I did not know if I was being mixed up with the Bosche injector pump that I helped my brother replace the lipseal on his IH 454 last year.

I have changed a CAV injector pump on a 434D which is the same BD154 engine as your backhoe.
It was about 30 years ago and I will try to remember the steps. The method I used was take an awl and scratch a line around the injector mounting plate. You will also find a couple of timing marks on the engine plate by the bolt holes that the injector pump mounts to. To remove the injector pump you have to remove all the fuel lines and the timing gear cover on the fan side.
Make sure you mark the timing gears or take note of where the factory marks are. Remove the nut on the shaft on the fan side of the timing gear. Remove the 3 nuts holding tne injector pump. Use a wooden mallet to tap the shaft out of the timing gear. There should be a key in the shaft.

Reverse procedure to install new injector pump, making sure to use your scratch marks to align the new pump. Most cases if the new injector pump is install in exactly the same location as the old one the timing should be OK. If timing is to slow tractor will be hard to start, if timing is to fast engine will kick back on the start when starting. Timing is adjusted by loosening the 3 mount screws and rotating the injector pump a small amount. If I remember correctly rotating the injector pump toward the engine block will advance the timing.

some mighty good information and all that I can use to remove the pump. As I receive more and more information, it points to the fact I do, indeed have a CAV pump vs the original thought being Roosa Master.

Your experience with the CAV or 30 years ago is outstanding. For I have found the marks ajaceant the mounting stud. I have the pump partially disassembled on the tractor but reluctant to remove it as I did not know how to maintain the correct time. Your explanation of removing the cover on the fan side of the gear drive is one I had not given thought.

Now things are beginning to make more sense to this 60 year old man who is not as smart on things as I'd like to be.

I believe I can make it from here with your very good explanations. Should I error in my thoughts this AM and find some more obstacles, I shall write them in this forum once again. Hopefully I don't have any more issues. However, if I may please keep posted to this forum for a few more days. THANKS and THANKS A LOT!

It's a CAV pump. I haven't got specs in house but could get them if need. If I remeber right there is inspection cover on side of pump, take off and roll engine till marks line up, remover cover ahead of pump unbolt same & R&R pump. If need more help e-mail

That is good information very much appreciated. I went to my farm a few minutes ago and looked at the marks on the ring inside the pump where the inspection plate was removed.

The inspection plate is held tightly by two small cap screws against a gasket to stop any leakage of fuel.

I turned the pump slowly by rotating the harmonic balancer with my left hand and holding a light with my right.

Very strange to me is the ring with timing marks has 8 such marks equally spaced and in alphabetical order. The first mark has A -, the second mark B -, and so on until H - comes into view.

After H - a small "1/2 moon" is part of the ring with the letters as described.

I cannot find any stationary item within the pump to align the marks! And if I do find it, I don't know which of the letters represent TDC!

Therefore, if you will be so kind as to research this on my behalf I am most grateful. I have a Jensen Manual for IH 3444 but it makes absolutely no reference to the fuel system. Mostly front end loader and backhoe references instead.

LA Bill, Not real familiar with the BD154. What type of injection pump do you have. I can possibly help if it is a Roosa Master pump.

The tractor is at my farm as I write this response as I am uncertain if it is a Roosa Master pump or otherwise. However, when I described the pump to the repair service man who rebuilt all four of my injectors for a handsome price, he replied it was a Roosa Master. I will confirm it when I feed my cattle this afternoon. Where on the pump will I find the identification?

The pump has two small call screws to vent the pump which requires a 5/16 or 7/32 wrench to turn. If that helps you to identify.?

So, if you can provide information to your knowledge of Roosa Master pump I am fairly confident, I will find the pump as that make.

The tractor is a 1971 model I am told with a 60 HP diesel engine. That came from a person whom I don't know and do not know how to relocate him at this time or I would seek his input on the matter questioned.
