Help with steering knuckel on I-544

I have a I-544 with the heavy duty fixed front axle. I noticed that one of the wheels would shimmy while driving and recently found out no movement (shimmying) should be present. I took the steering kuckel out, repacked the bearings, and put it back togather. I did not make note of the position of the knuckel with respect to the steering arm (upper piece with teeth) that connect to the ball joints. I need some help with the following:

1) In positioning the steering knuckel to the steering arm, do you just make sure the wheels are straight and eyeball it? I could not find any marks to help me line it up.

2) How tight should the steering kuckel top bolt be to hold it againt the steering arm. Before I started they were finger tight. I do not want to crush my bearings, but his seams pritty loose. As my bearing all looked good, I think this might be part of the shimmying of my front tires.

Also, have you ever noticed as soon as you get one part of your tactor running good (the engin in my case) something else always seams to break.

Ok, I put weight on the wheel and I still have about a 1/4" gap between the steering arm and the knuckel. It appears that the knucket is only splined so far. The steering arm hits the non splind part of the knuckel and will not go down any further. The arm is almost this 1/4" thicker then the knuckel spline. I have enclosed a picture showing this 1/4" gap. What do you think?

The knuckle has to be more than finger tight,it has to be pulled up tight or you could even use lock tite on it,make sure the spline is not moving inside the housing,I sometimes put a spot of weld to stop them from moving.
Hang in there bits fall off all the time,one of the thrills of owning an old girl.lol.

Dave, I have put everything back togather. I tighten the steering knuck bolts as tight as they would go. When I lift the knuckel, it still moves about 1/4" in it's houseing (both sides). This this correct? I have not put the wheels back on yet. Maybe with wieght on the tractor, the bolt will be able to tighten more?

Additional, after scraping all the grease off of the steering knuckels, there are marks on the top that I assume should point out 90 deg from the tractor to correctly line the knuckels up. This is what I did and it lookd straight.

When I jacked up the front end, I noticed the knuckel dropped about 1/4". I do not understand why both knuckels would be the same 1/4" loose. They must have both worn down the same.

Hi Gramps, is it possible to put shims or washers to remove the slack from the top not the bottom,when you put the weight on you will get more slack at the top,let me know how you get on, (wash the grease off your hands before you type, lol.)
