I have ben having trouble w/ my 49' "C"...I have replaced the spark plugs/ wires/ points/ battery/ new starter, intake manifold gasket & carb mounting gasket & rebuilt the carb....now, I can get it running but it backfires & "spits", & "pops" & it fouls the plugs ...does this sound like a intake valve problem?

Did you replace the condensor? I have had new ones that were'nt "right" make a tractor run just like what you've described. If so, try putting in the old condensor and see if it runs right.

Josh: Just a hunch, did you by chance go wrong way around your distributor with wires for firing order. I did this in a hurry one day, and what you describe sounds very familiar.

Sounds like the timing could be off. Did you set the timing after you changed the points. You will need to.

It is probably 45-50 years since I changed my first set of points on a Farmall. Most of the time since I have had 2 to 4 of those 4 cylinder gassers. I'm thinking I probably changed 75-100 sets of points in my lifetime. I could count on one hand the number of times I adjusted timing as a result of the new points. Of those 5 times timing was probably off before points were changed. I fail to see how changing points in a Farmall could affect the timing.

Oh and by the way about 3 weeks ago I went to shed, my 3 tractors hadn't been going in 2-3 months. They each fired up within 20 seconds. I cant remember the last time timing was set on my Super A or 130. I know 140 was timed last spring, as I had just bought it. I don't recall that it was anymore than a check, as I didn't change it. I did throw away the cruddy set of points and condencer that someone bought at a nickel and dime store.

My 140 is a bit of and amusing story as it had been owned by 3 guys that hadn't been able to get it going in the past 5-10 years. I've heard various stories on that one. A neighbor and I went to pick it up and we had it running well enough to load on his truck within 5 minutes. We took with us fresh gas, good 12 volt battery and most ign. replacement parts. The gas and battery were all that was needed that day.

I agree with tall corn, also check your valve clearances.
Cheers
