Opened up the reservoir to see what my sector and worm gear looked like...it was packed full of grease. So I cleaned out the grease, filled it with diesel..and found out why the grease. There is a pinhole in the bottom of the reservoir. Ill probably just put a spot weld on the hole, but is there any reason why the grease wouldnt work? I know it takes sae 80. But the grease seemed like an easy fix.

The best thing I have found is "corn head lube" .It is used in the gear boxes of cornheads. It is thin enough to flow but won't run out like oil.I have used it also in gearboxes of manure spreaders, hayrakes, etc. and have got along fine.

I've known of people using STP Engine Treatment. And thy're pleased with it.I like something sold by Snapper lawn mower dealers called SNAPPER'00'. It is a rear gear lube used in their mowers. It is thicker than 90 wt.gear lube, but thinner than bearing grease.PS,the trouble with brg.grease is it will harden after several years, becoming wax-like.It will then accumulate all around gears, never actually touching them and gears get no lubrication at all.Have seen more than once.Hope this helps!

Flap gerboxes on KC-135 aircraft are lubed with a mixture of oil and grease. It is thinned to about half thickness. Would this work for a steering box?

I have the same thing in my C. People I talk to say it is a common practice as the seals are difficult to keep from leaking. Seams to work.

There's grease in my M. Not sure about the H. Ill be removing the steering shaft on the M in the next week or 2 so I can get the radiator boiled out. What grease should I use to repack that reservoir? Just regular wheel bearling grease or what?

Thanks

The grease will be cleaner by a long shot than oil. You shouldn't weld on a tractor unless it's absolutely necessary.

I have grease in my "H" and I think lots of people use it instead of the originally recommended oil. Hard to keep the oil from leaking out.
