Could someone please tell me the best way to set the timing on my 49' farmall c....I put #1 @ TDC & the rotor looks to be pretty dead-on to the number one firing position...is there more to it than this? Any help would be appreciated!! I have got to get this tractor running, I am losing my shirt w/o it.

The conventional way would be to use a timing light, and adjust to the specs in the book. I guess I'm from the old school. Just loosten the distributorn so it will turn. Turn it back and forth until it runs good. I prefer to advance it until it starts to cut out a little then back it off just a hair. Just play with it.

make sure that when you have no 1 at TDC that it is on the compression stroke (it will also be TDC on the exhaust stoke-which , of course will not run !)

Timing mark on flywheel (hard to find, but I promise you it's there) should line up with the raised mark on the cover behind the oil pan, viewed from below. The timing marks should be aligned along with the rotor pointing to # 1. Pull the coil wire out of the dist cap and hold it next to the dist primary terminal, it should spark at TDC when everything is lined up. If not you have other problems.

At TDC the points should be just starting to open.

If your distributor is anything like an M's, if your rotor is lined up correctly with the piston at top dead center, put the distributor back on, loosen the two nuts that hold it in place. On the M's, you could move the distributor counterclockwise, and clockwise until you think that you have it pretty close. Putting it on the dyno would be the best way to do it, but I did it all by the sound on my M. Best of luck!
