You can also look at the casting codes on the major chasis parts which look something like MM*DD*Y (month, day, year, where year is a letter code).

For a 400, you should see a Y code of
Z = 1954,
A = 1955, or
B = 1956.

For a 450,
B = 1956,
C = 1957, or
D = 1958.

Does the mm/dd/yy date code extend back to Hs ? If so, what would J mean ?

Thanks

Greg

J is 1940 according to Guy Fay's book. Have to be a bit careful with this since IH skipped a letter every once in while.

On the gasoline tractors the 450 will have a bigger gas tank that sticks down below the hoods a little. The fast hitch on a 450 looks about like the one on a 560. On the 400 it may be different. You can't always go by this because some of the 400's have had these things changed. The only sure way is to check the serial number like FarmallH42 mentioned earlier.

400 will have 264 cast into the block
450 has 281 cast into block
450 should have front nose tin white (people paint 400 tin white too)
serial numbers?
Hope this helps a little...
