A few people on the forums suggested that I block the front of the tractor and rig it so that you pull the rear away. Of course I decided not to do it that way. I figured I would block the rear and pull the front away from it.

I would have to say that after this. The forum suggestions were correct. If it were not for a suggestion from Nebraska Cowman to use some all thread. This would have been a disaster.

I used a cheery picker hooked to the frame rails to support the front and allow me to move it. This did work as you can see, but the front wants to pivot on the chain. I am not sure how to explain it but the wheels moved forward changing the angle.

Luckily I have the threaded rod on there to keep it lined up. Needless to say this is as far as I am going to split it this time. There is just enough room for me to get at the clutch and replace it.

Yea you know me and self control. The two shall never meet. Besides it was on sale :-)
The worst part is that means my wife is right about me and spending money on Tractor stuff.
Of course I wont ever tell her that.
Dont you have the same issues with WD's?

Sure Do. At the dinner table this evening I thad to say "Had to order a new starter for the 300 this morning." Just hope the UPS guy comes a day when she's gone, got a feeling that starter is coming in a big box.

I got a trick for that. I keep a variety of card board boxes strewn around the garage. That way if the UPS guy drops one off. She does not see it right away and I get a chance to get it out to the shop with out grief. Some times.
Now if she is home when he comes..... Oh Oh...

The UPS guy dropping off boxes isn't to bad anymore. The one I have probems with is when I come home with a loaded trailer. Sometimes, if she's not home, I put it in the garage and unplug the opener. When she comes home she thinks the battery is dead in the remote. By this time I have already made reservations at her favorite restruant.

Put some kind of wedging between front axle and the bolster, this will help that problem.

I didnt have a problem with side to side movement. It moved forward on its own.
I think its because the C-picker is hooked to far forward to the the center of the front end.
Might not of had this problem if I could have hooked it at the end of the frame rails closer to the clutch housing. C- picker just not big enough.

Could you take nuts on the backside of the threaded rod and use that to keep it from sliding off the end? That'd make it easy to put it together too--just get gear type box end wrench and crank her down gradually.

The threaded rod looks like a great idea. And simple too.

I think Nebraska Cowmans idea with the threaded rod. Is to use 4 of them. One at each corner. Grade 8 to support the whieght of the tractor.
Use no jacks or anything and just pull the tractor apart.
I think that would be a real easy way to do a clutch job.
I could only find grade 2 all thread. So did not want to try that.
I will be splitting my 300 some time this winter. I am going to try to find some grade 8 all thread and give that a try.

Ok.
I bet they will cost some Duckets though. Those 3/4 x6 inch grade 8 bolts cost me $3 each.
