I was going to adjust the brakes on the old H , Looked in the manual for the proper way to do this and found out one of the set screws is missing on one side.(Another can of worms about to be opened). Pulled off the cover to discover the seal had been leaking .Band and drum look good.How do I get then seal out???. There is a flange type plate that holds the seal.Does that have to be removed in order to get the seal out.Can any of you out there tell me where I can get the parts needed to fix this or part #'s. Thanks to all of you who can help

Don't try to take out the flange that holds the seal. This is more than a flange. It is the bearing cage and holder for the pinion gear and shaft. You cannot take it out unless you go inside the transmission and remove the axle out of the bull gear so you can drop down the bull gear to get clearance for removing the pinion cage. If you try to force the bearing cage out, without removing the bull gear first, you will just break something. The bull gear runs in a slot in the pinion cage, preventing removal unless the bull gear is removed first.

I also learned the hard way last fall when i thought i knew what i was doing. I was new with the Farmall's and hadn't been inside the rearend yet.

I am guilty of that bull cage removal technique in 1991. Casting piece is still in the transmission case. Someday I will pull it out, LOL

Don't take the plate out. I don't have a seal puller so I have always just used a hammer with small chisels or flat tipped screwdrivers to pry them out. Squeeze them toward the middle then pry them out. Case IH will have the new seals.The original seals have two lipseals in them and you only get one in the new ones so they recommend putting two on each side.

Gary,

You can buy new seals from your local IH dealer. I am getting ready to do the same on my H. Apparently, the seal will come out without removing anything except the cover, band and drum. My understanding is that the seal is a bugger to remove and may have to come out in pieces. I think it was The Red who suggested drilling some holes in the seal to weaken it first. I'm thinking of using a small cutting wheel to slice through the main body of the seal in several places (being careful not to reach the casting of course), then drill a hole and put in a lag screw to gain some purchase and try to collapse the seal that way. I'll let you know how and if it works.

Punch a hole in the seal body with a awl and screw in a auto body slide hammer screw. The slide hammer makes this a easy job.
