Mag Timing for Farmall H

Was over to see the folks this past weekend, and helped my father with his Farmall H. He took the engine apart for rebuilding and had it all back together, but it would not start.

His first problem was no spark from the mag as he had connected the battery to the mag kill post and burnt the points (thinking a mag was similar to a distributor/coil system) - install new points and rewire switch to connect to ground to kill the mag (I own two old model L gravely walk behinds with mag's, so I understand the mag system). The mag will now produce a spark.

He did have the mag housing off the tractor for repainting and when he went to re-install it, he was looking for timing marks on the gears - there were none, and his manual is not much help as it is based on the fact that the mag was not removed from the engine. Now he needs information/diagrams on setting the timing of the mag to the #1 cylinder. If any one has information or diagrams they can send me, I will forward them to him.

I just bought an H but have not picked it up yet. On my M you find the compression stroke of the number 1 cylinder by putting your finger over the spark plug hole to sense the pressure. The mark on the front pulley should be close to the marker. The trick is to set the impluse coupling to trip at top dead center and for the rotor to be pointing at the #1 spark plug. You have to play with the ajustment to make it work. There are no marks on the gears and you don't need marks. Just turn the gears as needed.

The position of the rotor, #1 cylinder, and marks on the crankshaft pulley should be as David says, in addition install the mag with the top against the block, with everything lined up as above. Then pull it away from the block until it trips. To check, make one more rev, preferably with the hand crank until it trips again. Every thing should be lined up as before.
