No Steering on my H

Gentleman, I need some help! Today I went to haul a load of manure with my H, backed up 3' and the tractor quickly wanted to jackknife. Looked at my front tires (narrow front) and they were cocked all the way to the side. I turned steering wheel but no tire movement at all. This is where I am at. I removed the hood and nose piece. I took off the cover for the sector gear. The worm was unscrewed from the half round gear so I re-threaded it back on. I turned the steering shaft but still no movement at tires. The pivot shaft that goes up to the half round gear does turn. I began jacking up the tractor and the (not sure what this is called) "lower bolster" began coming out of the heavy cast piece. The tires stayed on the ground. If I continue to raise the tractor it looks like this lower part will fall right out. My questions are what happened to cause no steering? What holds the lower part into the casting from just falling out? Does anyone have any pictures of this or diagrams? My books don't show much. I'm going to go back out and have a better look. Thanks in advance!

The nut that screws onto the top of the bolster shaft against the steering sector gear holds the bolster shaft from dropping out. So if the nut is on the shaft and the bolster is dropping out the bottom then Bob is right on , the bolster shaft is broken. If the plug is installed in the steering housing the steering worm shaft shouldn't be able to come out of the steering sector gear I don't believe.

Tony - Sounds like the upper bolster pivot shaft has snapped. Ordinarily the sector gear in the steering box keeps the front wheels in place when you jack the tractor. The fact the front wheels stay on the ground you jack it up says the shaft is broken.

The good news is the pivot shaft not difficult to replace, and any decent boneyard should have a replacement.

Punch below for pix of of mine when I had it apart a few years ago...

Thanks for the replies fellas. Thanks for the pictures too Bob. I went back outside after my first post to get a better look at things. After some more disassembly I discovered what both of you diagnosed, the shaft is broken. It broke right where the small diameter turns into the large diameter section of the shaft. The gears and brass bushings don't look to bad. Bob, in your pictures you said that you made some spacers and that the thrust bearing was improperly installed. Could you explain the order of installation with the seals, washers and thrust bearing? Thank you very much!

Tony - At the bottom of the pivot shaft first there's a spacer (the piece that was missing on my tractor) then the thrust bearing. The thrust bearing has a "top" and "bottom". You can tell by inspection which is which - make sure you don't install the bearing upside down!

The pivot shaft seals will remain in place when you remove the pivot shaft. Unless you're gonna replace the pivot shaft bushings you can simply leave the seals alone.

The sector gear may be difficult to remove from the busted pivot shaft. It's on a tapered spline and usually requires several good licks from a fair sized hammer to break free. Be careful support the sector gear so as not damage it when knocking the shaft out!

One more tip: Make sure the new pivot shaft is in the "straight ahead" position before installing the sector gear, and that the sector gear is centered on the worm gear. And remember to put the lower bolster mounting bolt with the extended head in the right front bolster flange bolt hole.

Hope this helps!!
