I would like to use a one way (Single acting) cylinder with my Farmall H Lift-All. I have a few questions. On the Hydraulic cylinder I need a breather, I was wondering what kind everybody uses? I got one that is a combination plug/breather. It works good but I have a concern about water and/or dirt getting in ,I pointed the hole down but if I put my cylinder on say something else, it may have the hole pointing up a little. Do they make a braather that would keep water/dirt out better? Thanks!!

A one way cycl only has one port so where will you put the breather. You must mean that you are going to use a two-way cycl as a single. Just put the breather in the other port making sure you use the right one for pressure line.

The loader I run on my C has just a pipe plug with a 1/8 in. hole drilled in it for relief on the cylinders. The hole is pointed down so it would be almost impossible to get water in it, but it doesn't seem to cause me any problems. I suppose if you were running the loader a lot in dust it could cause some problems with cylinder wear and dirt in the hydraulic oil.

I don't know much about these things, but when I bought new cylinders for my H the hydraulic repair shop owner assured me that the combination plug breather like you describe is the correct part for the job.

I got the impression from him also that dust and dirt is a more immediate concern than water, and that you should go to great lengths to keep the system very clean when changing oil or hoses.

One other thing. I have a Cub with a touch control system and the manual suggests that the piston be in the retracted position when not in use so that the smooth piston surface is not exposed to the elements. I thought that this may be a good idea for the H cylinders as well, not only to protect the piston, but to minimize internal cylinder surface area on the back side of the seal that could be exposed to moisture entering the breather. The disadvantage here is that unlike the TC system, the H Liftall is not typically set up to provide downward pressure, so you have to pull the pistons down by hand the next time you need hydraulics.

I would be most interested to hear what comments others may have on this practice.
