About a year ago I bought 450 IH, the motor was locked so I decided to overhaul her, went completely through the engine inside and out, when it came time to start her up something just wasn't right. When I got her on the dyno and put a load on the motor it started to knock, sounded something like a compression or ignition knock possibly, so then I advanced the timing some and it did not knock as bad but the motor still just didn't have the right sound, never did, always sounded like it was struggling to run, the engine also seems to have excessive carbon in the exhaust. I'm completely fed up this motor, and am looking for some suggestions or solutions, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jeff

Had a similar problem with my SMTA. Not enough power, hard starting. I noticed air pressure out of the air cleaner. Found out the cam gear was loose and keway had chipped out allowing cam timing to get out. Good luck on it.

This is a long shot but have you had the cam gear off the camshaft? If not, could be the half moon key in the cam hub has sheared. So while the cam gear itself is still in time with the crank, the cam can be way off.

This has happened TWICE to a buddy's 400 in the past couple of years. I suspect gear load from the live pump causes the cam gear nut to loosen, then the key shears.

Jeff,
First thing that comes to mind -- are you certain you have the cam timing correct?

Front cover is off as we speak, thought the same thing except the dots line up like an arrow. Jeff
