I have a 1066 hydro and I like it for making hay but that is about all it can do on our farm. I havent did much hay making with it because i bought it at an auction completely repainted and looked great some things needed done yet so i bout it for 5,300 and am now going to have more than 4,000 in it when i am done. The engine needed rebult and then i started running into all the things that dont go bad but seemed to be bad on this one put 40hrs on it after i was done with it and as soon as i got it home the turbo blew up fixed that then the front seal went out and is now knocking havent looked yet but i think the crank is either cracked broke or bent. But i do like it yet just cause it is nice and shiny.

it's too bad you want a bigger diesel. if your doing square bales, and are not worried about fuel economy the 656 hydro was the best ever made. of course, i'm biased..

How about a 1026 Hydro or 1066 Hydro if you could find one. Even a 1066 gear drive would work great. There's no such thing as too much horsepower as long as you use it wisely.

ALL RIGHT WHATS WITH THIS "HYDRO" NAME?wOULD THIS MEAN HYDROSTATIC? NEVER DROVE A BIG TRATOR WITH IT ONLY NIEHBORS LAWN TRACTOR.SOUND LIKE A GOOD THING TO HAVE WHEN BALING .WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOOK OUT FOR ON A USED HYDRO?

I'm not sure whether you are talking about small square bales or round bales, I assume you are talking about the small bales. We've used a 504, and 666 gas on our MF 10 baler. 666 works great. Could pull a wagon with 250+ bales on it, and this in in some pretty steep hills. Also worked great on a Vermeer C round baler. We also use a NH 9' haybine. 666 works great, and they are fairly reasonable. Just traded ours in for a combine, and I think they are asking around 5 grand for it. The paint was bad, but the tin was straight. We recently started using a 756 diesel on the baler, and found it an advantage because of more gears. Didn't need the extra size or power, but the gears make a lot less use of the clutch. It all depends on whatelse you plan on using the tractor for, and personal preferance.

Lots out there so sort of depends upon what you like and what you can find in your price range. I wouldn't think those smaller balers would take that much power to run. Assuming it is pto you will want something with live pto. To run the haybine you may need more power, depending upon the type and size and how heavy the hay is but yu will want a wide front end so you aren't running over the previous windrow. You will also need at least one remote hydraulic control to lift haybine and some have another on the swing.

We used a 560D for years and it was our main work horse...I loved that tractor..you can pick them up for a reasonable price now.

Aaron: If it were diesel, you probably already have one of the better baler and haybine tractors ever produced. Like you I think the Farmalls being higher give you a better view of everything. However big horse power is not the answer, it will just cost you money, and buying is only part of it.

I once baled 9,000 bales with thrower in two days, with Farmalls 300, 130 and a Cockshutt 540. 130 raked the hay, 300 baled and Cockshutt pulled wagons to barn. That hay was all under cover at end of 2 days, not just baled and lieing in field. My wagons were 20 x 8 and I never had any problems on hills behind either tractor. Interestingly enough I later added a 560D, 656D, and 1066. 300 still hold record on my farm for most bales in 2 days.

When some of these guys have trouble with a haywagon pushing a 966 on the hills, they must be using 53' highway trailers for haywagons. My 20' wagons held 150 bales from thrower and I've often pulled one to barn with Farmall 130.

We use our old 966. Plenty of raw power, low drawbar hight with the 34" tires so that the kicker throws higher, and maneuverable. Works good, just be sure the TA is forward when coming down hills, and watch those hills. Kinda light in the rear even with loaded tires.
