More on the 300 utility - anybody got one?

I got the hoses connected correctly for the loader, and it works, but something is still odd about this tractor. All the hydralic control levers seem to operate opposite of what I would expect them to, including the fast hitch. Every lever has to be raised to lower the implement, and lowered to raise the implement. Is there someplace that something could be backwards causing this? It is very annoying. The loader is single acting, so there are no hoses to reverse to correct this, only one hose per cylinder.

Agree with "dick". We have a few 300s & a 350. All of them including the one my grandfather bought in'56 work like you describe.Just the nature of the beast!

The original handles for the hydraulic controls on the 300U had a 60 degree bend in them and were designed to wrap back up over the top of the control valve. A lot of these tractors now have handles which point forward, and if you think about it you'll see how this reverses things so that raising the handle does the opposite of what was originally intended.

The Fast Hitch is supposed to go up when the valve handle rotates in the same direction as the tractor tires do when it is moving forward - if things don't work this way, the hoses are reversed. This is important if you want the cross-check valve (which may or may not still be present on your tractor) to work properly (without it, the hitch is very unlikely to hold a heavy load up for any period of time). The cross-check valve is a rectangular block about an inch thick which bolts onto the bottom of the Fast Hitch control valve; the hoses going to the hitch cylinder should be coming out of this block.

Thanks for the info. The tractor is in the shed now, and it is dark and snowing out, so my memory will have to serve me. The levers curve upwards, but I dont think they go over the top of the control block. The fast hitch works the way you describe, but the handle is such that it seems like I am pressing down for it to go up. I will have to look closer tomorrow if the snow stops.

It's just a shot in the dark, but on top of your control block there is a knob that can be rotated for single or double acting cylinders. If they are single cylinders, you may have it set for doubles. Try that. Otherwise, maybe the lines are crossed? Zak
