Mouse nest in Torque Tube

Last weekend I decided to start my tractors and give them a good warm up. In my Super A, I encountered a mouse building a nest in torque tube . He was using material from an old sofa cushion I find quite comfortable on SA seat for and old backside. Since I had the other tractors running and SA was last, I started it and immediately closed doors on shed, and left the tractors running. My thinking was that fumes and carbon monoxide would cause the mouse to rethink this location as a winter home. Corn and beans around me have all been harvested in past month.

Lo, I went to shed today and his home building continues. The little devil ran down the drawbar, me swiping at him with steel bar. He managed to avoid me. Using heavy wire and a screwdriver I removed about 2 quarts of his nest material. I then for want of a better material sprayed an ample supply of penetrating oil in torque tube from both ends. Just so he wouldn't decide to move I did the 130 and 140 as well.

Does anyone have some better suggestions? Mouse has got to go. A friend had this happen with Super C and started tractor without realizing mouse nest was there. It wound up in release bearing and presure plate fingers, breaking the fingers off presure plate as well as bending the activation lever to the release bearing. Costs a lot of time and money.

I guess I haven't been using tractor enough, and mouse decided some creature may as well use them.

Hugh, I plug all the holes on my 46 A with steel wool. Someone on this board had mentioned several months ago that the little buggers hate chewing through the stuff. So far, so good. You just have to remember to remove the steel wool before taking her for a spin.

The mice love those torque tubes on the A and C. Both of my Shop Mules were afflicted with this when I aquired them. One was spit to fix the clutch. The other I just cleaned out as best I could through the hand and other access holes. I found that after you get out all you can by hand that using a compressed air blow gun with extended tube on it works pretty well to clean the stuff out. Pretty messy though and not so pleasant down under a tractor while doing that.

My recent experience with these little devils was when my Border Collie started sniffing around the wash tub on the front porch that contained Fall decorations. (No we're not still using wash tubs for the intended purpose). Carfully emtied all the pumpkins, etc out being careful to leave the mouse. Mouse could not escape from the tub and much to my surprise the dog took care of it. I was surprised because that is the first time I know that she ever killed anything. As some of you likely know Border Collies are bred to herd, not kill anything and I actually think she was only trying to nip it to make it go where she wanted and did not intend to kill it.

Paul: I have to agree with Joe on this. I had a border collie once, and the one thing he enjoyed more than herding was cleaning out some part of barn that was mouse infested. I had about hundred bales of straw left one season. I knew there were mice in there. Border collie went under every bale as I picked them up. Man was he agressive, by times we just had to stop and enjoy his enthusiem. Cat was there too, but she would take one mouse and just torture it. The border collie on other hand killed every mouse that moved. He even upset me once, going between my legs after a mouse. It seemed the more I praised him the harder he went after them, that part is border collie.

Trust me on this one, border collies are great mousers. Every one I've ever known can kill more rats and mice than a terrier. They do it for fun, or maybe: knowing how much we hate the little devils they do it to please us. Mine caught a mouse live and gave it to a kitten to kill. Smartest dogs I ever knew.

My Austrailan Cattle dog gets mad at mice trying to steal her food from the bowl. She takes great pleasure in catching one, then she will throw it up in the air catching it - she will do this for hours.

Herders are great mousers..

Yea, I was amazed by our Dalmatian. But I guess being bred to be barn dogs around teams they had to do something for recreation.

If you have electricity out in your shed, you might want to try those ultrasonic mouse repellers. It's suppose to be so loud and disturbing to the mice that they leave. I've put a couple in my shop this winter and haven't seen any signs of mice yet.

Hermit: Tell me a bit more as to sources. These devices work well on motor vehicles keeping deer away. These would also keep mice out in fields and much more vulnerable to cats.

Hugh, Have you considered installing a squirrl cage on the drive shaft and utilizing some of this mousepower you seem to be accumulating?

Paul: Now there is an idea, I only see one problem, that being the effect I may get when I depress clutch and mouse is at full speed. He may create the same problem as some of the guys get into with bush hogs and no over running clutch. His momentum may push when I don't want to be pushed.

Naw, the mice have little legs, and dont have much torque. The brakes can handle it.

I had a friend that said you have to feed em, rat poison that is. Don't get mice posion get the better rat posion. Little green pellits. Keep a constant supply out for the mice in little trays or cups. I fill my trays every few weeks. I have about 6 trays in the barn, near all possible entrances. You'll still see the mice around, but the ones you do will probably be dead. I find an occasional nest started but the mice are gone. Be carefull if you've got little ones and house pets.

It's fall. Time to get out the Victor mouse traps again. Dave.

Dave: The Victor was a great idea in its day, however with the vast supply of corn stover adjacent to my shed, I may find myself becomming a professional trapper. I think my cats will eventually clean up on the mice. It is just right now, cats tend to get a bit behind as that mouse migration from field to buildings occurs.

Hugh you don't want to trap that mouse,PETA will be on you like stink-on-poopoo. No more than what mouse hides probably bring you would't even pay for your trap. Good luck. Tom

Those meeses are rodentii farmallensis, and were specifically bred by IH and installed at the factory. It's bad luck to remove them. ;o)
