piston clearance

A widowed friend of mine has asked me to get her late husband's F20 running. It was stuck but not badly. Now that I've got everything cleaned up I have .025-.030 clearance between the sleeve and pistons with about .012 taper from top to bottom. She doesn't have much money and only wants it running good enough for the local parade once a year. Is this baby going to knock badly or can we get by with rings only? Any experience out there?? Thanks for the opinions.

Thanks guys. You confirmed my thoughts exactly. Guess I'll have to take a box of Kleenex and give her the bad news.

Val,

I learned the hard way and will never do another overhaul by replacing just the rings....I feel it is a complete waste of time and money; a band aid repair at best.

However, I understand where you are coming from and why you want to do it the cheaper way; sure.

But, if you have that much play and the original specs call for a .004 to .005 clearance, those things are going to be trying to swap holes on you. A .012 taper is going to push oil like crazy.

I don't think you can see daylight on this one; it's either a full-steam-ahead deal or close the book on it.

Just my view,

Allan

Original specs are .004/.005 clearence new. Since it must have been running that way when parked, it may run??? with new oversize rings & knurled pistons. Consult your local automotive shop for their ideas. Good luck.

Seems like an awful lot of clearance...most engines have between .002 and .003 piston to cylinder wall clearnace.
