This is not a subject i have seen discussed much before, maybe I am doing something real thick. Anyway.
This problem has two parts.
1. When cranking the AV I have a regular recoil which I know to look out for but is a surprise to others. I have timed mag per the book and it generally runs well and will start on the 3rd or 4th crank. What causes the recoil and how do i solve the problem so I dont in a moment of forgetfullness break my thumb.
The second part is a starting problem as well. I have a new battery (6v) had the starter reconditioned. New cables (Heavy Duty) and good connections (I have learnt plenty from the board) It will start to turn over but i am thinking that the recoil problem is hampering the starter and stops it dead. This is my last thought on solving this mystery. I once again welcome all opinions. The AV is mobile and the first show is end of January. So after the Christmas holidays it gets stripped down painted and back together again! BTW i need to work full time as well. Can't beat a challange. For those that have been bothered to read this far here is the start of my web site. The official launch is still some time off. Merry Christmas to you all.

When my Dad starts his regular,he always lifts the crank. He said thats the way they always did it so it wouldnt catch the thumb. His recoiled too till he got it timed right.

Try setting the timing a little bit AFTER top dead center. That way when the spark occurs it will push the piston down the cylinder the right way.
Are you sure the TDC mark is accurate?
Remove # 1 spark plug and hand crank it near TDC, place a long skinny screwdriver or piece of stiff wire in the sparkplug hole so it rests on the top of the piston, and SLOWLY crank until the indicator(wire, driver) stops moving and begins to go the other direction. You have just located TDC. Verify that the timing mark is where it is supposed to be. It helps to have an assistant.

Yes, you need to retard the spark a little . You should be able to rotate the mag enough to do this. It is firing to soon.

Hi,someone else has already said this but my dad's first rule of cranking was ALWAYS PULL UP ON CRANK AND NEVER PUT YOUR THUMB AROUND THE CRANK HANDLE. This was from a man that had cranked my engines in his life not only tractors.
Too many of his friends had suffered broken thumbs and broken arms.

Be careful
JB
