Pippin Backhoe on a 1941 H - perforrmance price?

Fellow at a nearby equipment dealer is selling a 1941 H with a model 116 Pippin backhoe. He wants $2500 for the complete setup but he said he'd sell the backhoe alone for $1500. I didn't note the make/model of hydraulic pump but it runs off the belt pulley drive (the belly pump has been removed).

I have two questions:

Is this a fair price for the backhoe alone?

How do these old backhoes perform? Are they so slow they are more of a curiosity or do they come close enough to modern backhoes of the same size as to be worth considering.

TIA

Dave

Mostly I would consider it a "novelty". Backhoes take a beating and many parts wear badly and are expensive to replace. I havn't seen the unit, but a friend just sold a 3pt in excellant shape for $2500, so the one your looking at could be pricey. Offer $1500 for the whole package, you could get back the money on the H.

He wants $2500 for the whole setup and, if I were to buy the whole thing (I have a decent '47 H) I'd be trying to sell an older H without the belly pump. I don't expect I'd get much over $1000 for it. If he had priced the backhoe closer to something I know I'd be able to sell it for - say around $800 or so, I'd've gone for it.

Thanks for the input,

Dave
