Farmall M running poorly after warming up

I've had a Farmall SM for over eleven years and use it for farm work, mostly grinding feed. It starts well (choked) and upon first warming up runs great with lots of power. However, after about 20 minutes it begins to loose power and I need to choke it to keep it running. Eventually it won't run at all. If I let it cool, it starts and runs again and the cycle repeats itself. I run 89 octane, lead additive and just put in new plugs.

Any suggetions? I can't figure it out.

Guys,
Thanks for the ideas; I'll try the easy ones first (like clogged vent cap). Since I use it for grinding feed which makes for a whole lot of dust, I'm hoping this is it. I'm inclined to go with the fuel delivery problmes first since I converted it to 12v a few years back so it has fairly new alternator and coil. I'll be grinding again tomorrow so if the clogged vent solves the problem, I'll let everyone know.
Thanks again,
Jeff

Jeff, Had this same problem with an Allis-Chalmers combine engine. I kept looking at the fuel system, but the problem was the coil in the magneto. As soon as it got hot, it would fail. Thinking it was a fuel problem, I would remove the carburetor in the field, clean it, check screens, etc. By the time I did all this the coil had cooled some and the engine would restart. Run for a bit and then quit. I replaced the coil in the magneto several years ago and haven't had any trouble since. Don't know if your SM has a distributor or mag. Ours has a distributor. Anyway, as other posts indicate - the problem is fuel, air or spark and your job is to track it down! Isolating the trouble can be frustrating - suggest you work on one system at a time. Good luck. Keep us posted. Tom

I have a farmall H that did the same thing it was the manifold gasket leaking, but it would run fine till it got warmed up, then it would only run full choke and full throttle, and barely have enough power to pull itself. It also could be a cracked manifold, when hot the crack opens up, and sucks air or exhaust.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me, the tip off is the fact that you have to choke it to keep it a going, there is a filter in the carb right where the fuel line is screwed in,check that there isn't a blockage in the passage going to the needle..... Start at the tank!,check the vent on the cap, check inside the tank for crap in it,take off the sediment bowl and clean the screen and open up the shut off valve and make shure the fuel flows out, sometimes the openings where the fuel comes out will get pluged off, check the fuel line and make shure it is clear and open.....Just for the heck of it,I hade a friend of mine that had trouble getting fuel, she could not figure out what the heck was the problem, come to find out the pivot pin that the flot rids on was half way out,and the flot would cock and limit the amount of fuel that would come into the bowl!,who would of guessed!..... ..... ...

Jeffrey,
Odds are it's either fuel or ignition - the problem is figuring out which part of which system. In addition to the other guys' good suggestions -- check for crud in the tank or fuel line restricting flow, and a bad condensor.

Sounds like the coil is breaking down after it warms up. 87 octane is more than adequate.

Check the cap on the fuel tank, the vent may be clogged.

I bet it's the clogged vent, choking won't keep a engine running with the ignition coil kicking out. Next time the tractor dies, pull off the cap, I bet it will be suctioned on.
