I am trying to replace the transmission input shaft seal on an M. I can't seem to get the drive shaft coupling off of the transmission shaft. It is hitting the clutch input drive shaft. It is so close but is hitting the other shaft, and wont clear the transmission shaft so I can get the seal housing off. Do I have to split the tractor to clear the drive shaft coupling from the transmission input shaft? Or do I have to remove the clutch shaft first? I thought you could also change the clutch without splitting the M. Maybe I am wrong. Please help!

I can't say that this is the proper way to get the job done but I loostened the bolts that connect the torque tube to the transmission and moved the back of the tractor away from the front about 1/4inch. This allowed enough room to take out the coupling and then replace the seal. I supported the front of the tractor and just took it slow and easy. Seemed safe enough to do this and it didn't require removing anything in order to get the back half of that coupling off.

What I remember from mine is leave the shaft linkage coupled but the bolts and nuts loose. The clutch plate springs must be compressed as Haas said and unbolted from the flywheel. Make two hooks from flat strips of metal to reach in on the edges of the clutch plate and pull it out from the the inside of the flywheel. Let it side out on the splined shaft. Once the clutch plate is outside of the flywheel inset the shaft can then be unbolted and all will come falling down on your belly. to install it reverse the proceedure.
Hope this helps.

It's been a while since I was in this part of the tractor, but I think you will have to take the drive shaft out before you can get the coupling piece off to replace the seal. And yes, if your tractor has the 11 inch clutch, you can remove and replace it without splitting the tractor. It's somewhat like working a chinese puzzle and things have to be taken out and put back in in the proper sequence. To get the clutch shaft out, you have to compress the clutch springs to release the tension on the clutch disk so you can tilt it to tilt the shaft so the shaft can be slid out. There are bolt holes in the clutch plate where you insert bolts an tighten then up to compress the clutch springs. Also, very difficult to get things in and out unless you remove the cross shaft that works the clutch fork. Fork is clamped to the cross shaft and also keyed with two heavy washers that go in slots in the shaft. It's been so long, that I'm sure I left out some details. HOpe this helps.
