I recently went through my cub engine, I now have a small oil leak at the rear main seal. A friend told me that IH used two different rear main seal retainers on the cub engine. Anyone have any experience with the retainers & seals on the cub. Thanks Mike

I have seen some that people used a lot of sealer on and they still fail after a few years.About 8 years ago I fixed one by cutting a piece of .001 shim stock to wrap around the seal, now I have done 3-4 like this and never had one come back leaking some will take .002 to get a tight fit.If you do this make sure that the seam in the shim stock is on the top side.

Mike,

The early seal retainers had a slightly larger bore and the available replacement seals fit too loosely. The IH solution is to sell you a new retainer to fit the available seal. !#$%^& That's not nice because they are VERY pricey. Many people have made the old retainer work by glueing the seal in with something like windshield sealer or RTV. You may find that the seal is turning inside the retainer.
