I was tearing apart my H and I found that the steering gear and worm gear were lubricated with heavy gear oil where as my M is lubricated with grease. The H is a '41 and the M is a '40 but I doubt that would have anything to do with it. Which is it supposed to be or better yet which works better? Also, the m steering gear is a sector gear with teeth only on like 2/3 of the gear while the H has teeth all the way around. I thought they would have been the same. Thanks for any insight.

Jeff

The later gears or the replacment gears from IH in the 70's will be the full circle gears. As far as I know the half gears are original to the H tractors.

80W90 or similiar is the proper lube for the steering gear. I on the other hand packed my "H" with a good grease.

These tractors original equipment steering gears were a full cicle gear. They could then be repositioned after the first half wore out and then you had brand new gear teeth to mesh with the worm gear. The replacement gears, only have teeth on half of the gears surface. Either grease or oil will work. They came with gear oil (80-90wt) in them but as the seals started to leak, some folks put grease in them. You need to check more often with grease in there though.

Jeff, I believe that resevoir is supposed to be filled with 30 or 40 weight oil, however many of them have bad seals and leak after a few years, probally the reason for the grease which I think is ok,but thats my opinion. I have 2 Hs one has the sector gear the other has teeth all the way around. One good thing the round gear can be repositioned if it is worn where the worm gear runs to tighten up the steering.Ed
