Farmall C Rear wheel issue!

I posted about my tractor woes last night and discovered a new problem a few minutes ago. I noticed that the valve stems on the back wheels looked different. Well, the area around the left side valve stem is rusted, and a washer was added to the stem to keep it from pulling through. Is it possible to weld a patch around that area inside ther wheel? I really dont want to replace the whole rim. the whole rim is rusted on the surface, thats the only part thats rusted badly.

Thanks! Tommy H

You state in a later response on this post that you want to restore it the right way. That would mean fixing this the right way which would be to replace the rim. To get a patch to the point where it is invisible to the eye is going to entail a lot of welding, grinding, and sanding to make it look seamless. Doing something the right way is going to cost money. There is no way to get around this fact.

The best "no-brainer" I've come across on this forum for your problem is to patch completely over the existing valve stem hole and drill another one in a different place on the rim. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Yes you can weld a patch in from the inside. The problem may be that there isn't enough good metal left to weld too. This problem is very common with rims on tractors that had calcium chloride in them for weight. You may need to get a replacement rim from a tractor salvage yard or a parts tractor.

expect to pay $75 or more for a good used rim. A lot of times you can cut a patch out of a junk rim and weld it in. If the tire is not leaking now and the rim isn't rusted to where it is coming apart I think I would leave it alone.

See, thats the thing, about a quarter size ($.25) around the valve stem is badly rusted to the point the stem moves. It is tubed and has a very slow leak. Im going to restore it the right way, but im not going to go out and buy a new rim if the original can be fixed.

Ill tell ya! Theres alot more wrong with this thing than Ithought! Im starting to wonder if its worth it.

Major stuff thus far without having removed anything: Intake/exhaust is cracked and missing chunks, Front rims are shot (adjustable kind), the seat is completely trash.Electrical is about as shoddy jerry rigged as it gets. Im not backing out, but daggum! Ill start tommorow and remove the battery, and wheel weights.

Welcome to old tractors. Start to fix one thing and find other things that need fixing. Pretty soon, you have the whole thing apart. As to your rim, weld a patch in the hole and drill a new hole for the stem. The C has a flat spot on the rim where the stem hole is, so if you can best to patch and redrill at same location. That is what I did, although I think it would work to redrill in another location. You won't know for sure what you have to do until you have the tire off. You can get a new rim from several suppliers (and likely IH as well). From aftermarket people, probably around $200. IH will be higher.
