Cub Gear Noise

I was looking to buy this Farmall Cub but when I test drove it there was a gear noise coming from,
I dont know the correct name for them, the are the
things the rear wheels are bolted to that go up
to the axle. These are the risers that make the rear of a cub like high-rider.

I'm pretty good at working with cars but I dont
have too much experience with Cubs. I know if a
car or truck was to make that noise it would mean
it needed another transmition or rear end.

Is it OK for a Cub to have a little gear noise and
if so how much is too much ?

Also has anyone put a tow bar on a Cub to pull it
with another tractor ? Is there a way that could
be done ?

Cub gears have square-cut teeth. They are naturally a little noisier than some. What you are describing is noise from the final drives or sometimes called the drop axles. If the gears are bad, it is an easy fix. I don't know about a tow bar, but if you have help, you could easily tow the cub with another tractor using a chain. If you have some distance to go, they trailer real easy. Even a single axle trailer would work for a short distance. The cub, with loaded tires and wheel weights would only run around 2000 lbs.

Unfortunately, towing from the front axle is a good way to wreck the front casting. Better to run the chain to the drawbar. Can't tow a Cub much faster than 10mph.

I driven some tractors that you can hardly stand the tranny whine. Like bigdog said, just the nature of the beast.
