I have a 43 M with a loader and converted to 12 volt. I was moving some dirt this morning and it was running fine. I shut it off for about 45 minutes. I started and shut off like normal. and everything else seemed to be normal. It hasn't been driven in about 2 weeks. I tried to start it, the selinoid hummed and clicked. so i thought maybe the selinoid is bad, so I took a jumper cable from the battery to the starter and all I got was a big spark with no noise or movement. I can not turn the engine by hand ( by turn turning the fan and belt). which i thought was odd. I guess i will take the starter off a see if i get the same result to narrow down if it is the startet or something in the engine..

any thoughts would be appreciated..

Thank You Mike

As has been mentioned, the ring gears on the old Ms get worn and the starter bendix gear gets hung up on a tooth. Loosen the starter and see if you can turn the engine via the fan blades. Tighten the starter back in and you should be OK. My neighbor Ernie has an old M that hangs up once out of every 20 starts. We keep a 7/8" box wrench in the tool box on the tractor. Depending on which year you have, you will have either a 2 bolt starter to the frame or a 3 bolt with a smaller bolt head in the later Ms.

The starter drive has locked up in the teeth on the flywheel, it happens sometimes on older tractors when a little wear is present. Do what the other guys mentioned, probably won't happen again for a long time. If it does get to be a real problem, replace the starter drive, and take a good look at the teeth on the flywheel, if they are rather chewed up, replace that also. The flywheel teeth are part of a ring which is separate from the flywheel.

put the tractor in 5th gear and rock the rear wheel back and forth and watch the fan. It will break loose and you will see the fan turn. Then it will start. Prob need a abendix on the starter. May not do it for long time again.

My M was locking up. When I loosened the starter everything was ok. Cut some shims from a pop can
and shimmed the starter out some. Had no problem after that. Mabe you could try that.

Thanks to everyone that helped.. it was just the starter. when it took off i noticed that one of the teeth on the starter was about 2\3 gone. the ring gear is worn but not as bad as the starter drive. I guess i will have to make a trip to the local case dealer..

Thanks again
