I want to make my drawbar into a swinging one. My father made ours fixed by bolting the part called a drawbar extention by pointing it foward over our drawbar and bolting it to the U shaped drawbar and in the process bent the U shaped drawbar. I was wondering which should my H have had (Ser# 300479), the strap or roller? Which is better? My drawbar is a little loose on the pin on the transmission end. I was maybe thinking of building the hole back up in my drawbar and getting it machined but does anyone know what the correct hole diameter should be? Mine is oval. Also my drawbar and U shaped drawbar are a little bent, I could probably straighten them with heat, I was wondering if they would be weaker? Or if I should I just get new ones , (IH doesn't make them any more) who sells the aftermarket ones that are like the origional and are good quality? Thanks!!!

Should be able to buy better draw bar items than what you got at a salvage yard. You might even find some with very little wear. The amount of wear on the draw bar of the tractor depended alot on what the tractor was used for. The draw bars that wore ussually got rebuilt back up. I have seen originals that looked in pretty good shape. Probably because tractor was used mostly with mounted implements.

John: You could straighten that drawbar in a press. One of the first things we always did with a new tractor was weld a 3/4" thick bar across the cross bar section of the U. They were never heavy enough from factory. As to roller or strap it's your preference, originally roller was optional and was good at cutting down on wear if you were doing work allowing drawbar to swing. On the pin under tractor it was oversize from new, aprox 1/8 over. This must be loose to allow for flexing of drawbar. A tight fit will break transmission case.

A prev. owner of my H had had the u bend in the middle. It was worn a little thinner right where the swinging drawbar rode. He got a salvage bar and cut it off just past the corners, right before where the angled braces attached. Then he welded it to the bottom of the u-bar so that the holes line up. You have to do sort of a double take to see what it is, that it's not just a bar as thick as it should have been from the start.
Since I use Mr. Haney mostly for pulling a trailer, often a somewhat over loaded dump trailer, I took the roller off the swinging drawbar and made a strap to hang it by, also welded half inch bar stock to the bottom to help carry the weight, and to keep it from bending while backing.

This one was from when I had the manually operated electric trailer brakes hooked up, too. I couldn't face telling my sister her grands went off the Saluda Grade.

You can buy a complete drawbar from OEM Tractor Parts, 800-283-2122. Roller or strap is your preference, the roller was optional. Drawbar, $149; swinging part $95; strap, $24; roller, $47; braces $24 each. The hole on the transmission end, I believe was just large enough for the pin to fit properly, being slightly worn doesn't hurt anything.

Our old H tractors had the strap. I think the hole in the swinging drawbar under the tractor is 1 1/8" (at least that's the diameter of the pin). I think your best bet for a replacement drawbar would be a salvage yard. You may be able to straighten the draw bar in a press if the bend isn't to severe without using any heat.
