Finally got the answer to my low end ta rattling noise.Have the smta stripped down to the last bellhousing bolt after removing top cover found planet gear teeth half gone on one assembly it was getting late and no further inspection was done.Just wondering if planet gears are shot is it worth dissasembling and inspecting further.I'm thinking by the time I get this one rebuilt piece by piece it will cost more than a new style sprag rebuilt from steel wheel ranch.Has anyone used this ta and are they better than the old style? Thanks to Chucks repair and Rebuilder for all your input and help.Paul

Paul: I'm happy you finally found your problem. I apologise for missing your last post, but i've been under the weather.

I have seen many T.A.'s come in with the gears stripped. Basically those gears get to wearing after so much use and finally give. Most likely all three planets are stripped as well as the primary(input) shaft and quite possibly the output(main shaft). You would do well to get a rebuilt T.A. and sprague. It should come with a good warranty(on parts only) of at least a year and in some cases five years on the sprague. Make sure to contact Kelly C because he got a heck of a pice in my opinion for rebuilt T.A. w/sprague.

As to whether the sprague is better than the old style ramps, I cannot give you first hand accounts of use. BUT just by looking at an old style sitting next to a sprague there is no comparison. You go from 8 cylinder locks to 32 camlocks. Unless you beat this tractor to death this sprague will probably outlast anything you want to do with this tractor. I wish I had pictures to show you the difference and maybe someone(possibly Kelly C) could post them on the forum.

Peace be with you this holiday season!

Rebuilder. Hope you feel well enough to open presents santa will be here soon. Are you saying kellyc is in the parts busniess? Another question why do they call it a seasonal disconnect on the ipto does it just lock out the rotation of the rear spline. Also how much metal do you think went through the rest of the transmission bearings when ta gears let loose planning on giving it a diesel bath and then going arround the case with a magnet should be able to get most of the loose stuff. Merry Christmas and good health in the new year.Paul.

Paul: No, Kelly C just recently purchased a T.A. to repair his tractor as you will see in old posts about 5-7 days ago. As far as gear teeth going through rear end you "could" have some damage but I think since most pieces(compared to speed or bull gear teeth) are small you will not have to worry especially since you are rinsing & inspecting the tranny.

Forgive me but my short term memory will not tell me what tractor you are working on. But a seasonal disconnect is somewhat hard to find. We get many people calling for parts, especially the coupler inside the tranny. Basically the seasonal disconnect allows you to uncouple the drive line for most of the time you don't use the PTO. This in essence saves wear & tear on PTO drive line bearings etc. from constant motion even though PTO is not being used. There is a splined coupler on PTO drive line which is decoupled when you removed the bolt and shift the lever/fork at the bottom of the tranny. It is generally found only on live PTO equipped tractors(SMTA/300/350/400/450/460/560 and maybe others). I would estimate that we find it only on 10% of the tractors we tear apart here. I would say it definately adds some value to your tractor.

Rebuilder.I'm working on a smta.Split was a sucess didnt drop it on my foot after removing seasonal disconnect plate I noticed that the previous owner or some hack welded the lever between the two bolt holes that secure enguaged or disenguaged didnt think to much about it at the time. After removal of ta housing I noticed that the same hack welded arround the ipto seasonal disconnect clutch hub,I would assume to lock it into drive because it worked fine using the hand control before split. will start to dissamble ta housing today and will let you know what I find.Paul.

Paul, my suggestion, if you have not already done so, would be to talk to Mike Bunck and Steel Wheel Ranch. I have spent loads of money at that place and have recieved honest and great technical info. This guy will answer any concerns about this new TA.
