Go for it!! This one was not running but engine was not stuck. I was lucky, after getting the gas side right, it started right up and switched to diesel. You could get lucky as well. I would try to get the engine loose and then go from there.

Im in the same boat with you.I bought a 53 SMD from a buddy who got scared of what it may end up costing to restore it.So far,all I have done was have the head rebuilt.Including the used valves I bought,I have 250 in the head.I have found the pistons and sleeves and gaskets so if the block is still good,Im going ahead with the rebuild of the engine, and from guesstiating Ill have about 2500-3000 in the engine counting the head.(Thats if the injectors and pump are still good)Will I ever get my money back out of it if Irestore it,nope! But what the heck!I know of only one MD,SMD or whatever used this engine around me so,I look at it as a rarity,if the engine aint no good, she goes for parts!

i would attempt to try and break it loose, you might get lucky and it won't be stuck bad. I once got an F-14 that was sitting in the woods with no carb and the exauset was gone. i stuck the crank in it and it was stuck, i figured i would see how bad it was so i put all my weight on the crank and she come loose. would have ran good if the carb had the right needle jets in it.

Sounds like a great deal to me. If the engine isnt too bad, you should do fine. I wouldnt suggest rebuilding the engine to new, unless its just for hobby sake. I have many engine parts, if you need something. The closer to NY the better, as everything is heavy more or less. If you arent too far away, and you decide to get rid of it, I might take a look. I kind of want one that I can throw all of my parts on. -Greg

Butch, Looks like people have some strong feelings about MD's!! I completely restored one several years ago and it is now my favorite Farmall. It depends on your intent in restoration. I can say that I spent at least $3000 on the engine including rebuild of the injector pump and injectors. Mine didn't have any cracked head or block, so that was for parts and machine shop costs (block cleaning, head valve work, crank work, etc.). Someone told me that if you can restore an MD you can restore any antique tractor. It is such a unique engine and a real conversation starter at tractor shows. I recently found an old TD-6 trac-tractor in the weeds with the engine stuck. Looks like a real challenge; however, I have experience now with the IH diesel engine so am considering. Roger

Butch: Ignore the one-word turkeys. The MD is one of the more collectible Farmalls, and is an excellent tractor in its own right. Although as Farmallgod mentioned, parts are harder to find than for a regular M, the good news is that (other than the obvious engine differences) the majority of the tractor is quite easy to find parts for. Even if you DO have to stick a couple of grand into the engine (and here's hoping you won't!) you've still got a nice tractor for either work or play.

When you have a restored MD you have something worth more than most tractors. And you can find most parts reasonable. Webers Tractor Works are very good to deal with for parts.

Ya that Weber is good to deal with. If you like over paying for dried out shrunken 50 year old gaskets and pay big money for them. That man must have a bunch of kids he is trying to put threw college. If you look hard those parts are out there. That Weber is a crook.I am able to find everthing I need on line and word of mouth. And I restored all of my 12 tractors from my f-14 to my WD-9

I have a 48 MD wonderful tractor people who dont like them probably don't understand how they work and or know how to work on them. Just be prepared to spend some money on parts they are getting hard to find. I have a pic on the tractor photos just type in " farmall md pulling tractor".Your probably looking at three grand on a engine rebuild to do it right.

I think an MD is a wonderfull diesel and a great testimony to IH leadership in diesel engines. Only IH and Cat had the determination and resourses to build, educate and service the new technology that the diesel demanded. I don't think most people realize how difficult and important their contribution was. Having said that I hope you realize what an enourmous money and time pit your MD could become. With stuck engine you could be looking at $6 - $8,000. Don't laugh - others who had no intention of spending that amount did and lived to regret it. I think you should find a running one and keep yours for parts. Good luck and I hope you get one of those sweet running diesels going!

Its amazing how people think they know it all. Read in your books and see who Developed the gas over diesel engine IH only baught the patent they did not invent it.

Butch. I am well aware that Rudolph Diesel invented the diesel. Read a book about him and find out how difficult it was to mass produce and sell the diesel engine in this country. IH and Cat were the early pioneers. Watch the early films IH produced and the incredible efforts IH put into making the diesel a commercial success. By the way our family sold MD's new at our dealership. I have been around MD overhauls for over 30 years. A friend just put $3,000 in the injection pump alone on a RUNNING MD and he took it on and off. Not nozzles, lines or precups. I do not think I know it all and I am sorry if I offended someone with my opinion. Merry Christmas!

Hey thanks to all who responded.Thats what makes this board what it is.Everyone has their opinion and thats what I was looking for.I only bought this md cause I wanted to rescue it from where it was sitting and didn't want it to disappear in the mud.I don't know if I will rebuild until I see it more after its home tomorrow. If not it will be for sale to who ever needs parts. The same farm also has a 560 with stuck engine also and if we come together on price that would probably be the one I will put money into. Thanks Butch
