Need to rebuild my 756 with a 310 diesel. Found a used 358 out of a 886. They look the same and was told only difference is the bore and stroke and they were both german diesels and the lenght and highth are the same and it will bolt right in. Is this correct and will they interchange with no other modifications? How much difference in hp.? also was told the 358 starts easier

The 310 and 358 are basiclly the same engine. The only difference is the stroke, and 358's have an oil cooler. A 358 out of an 826 would bolt right in a 756 for sure, but I know that the front engine mounts were different on the 358's in the 786, 886, 3088, and 3288. You might be able to change the mounts, or you might have to change the whole front cover. We have an 826, 786, and 3088 all with 358's. The 786 and the 3088 start ten times easier than the 826. The 826 starts ten times easier than the 686 with the 310 we used to have. The 358's in the 86-88 series have a lot of updates, such as higher compession pistons, an updated injector pump, and a different cylinder head with different injectors, which makes them a lot easier to be around, since they don't smoke and stink while running at an idle. As far as horsepower, the 756 has 76 HP from the factory, while an 886 has 90. A 358 with an M&W turbo kit will put out 130 HP easy. Let me know how the switch goes, I've been thinking of trying the same thing someday.

yes the 358 should go right into place of your 310, though i'm not sure about if they start any better since they should both use rotary german bosch pumps. it's hard to say if any motor starts any better than the next motor, since all different variables come into play, ie. fuel quality, injector and pump condition, air temperature, altitude, and most importantly condition of the motor itself.

IH changed the thermostat on the later 385's and that could give you a problem.
